YAY! Somebody asked about MY bike finally :)

Unfortunately, I don't think the Trek 7100 is ready for the streets of NYC. Don't get me wrong, I really am having a great time with my 7100, but if I were you I would look at some other options. Something a bit quicker and more responsive would be in order. There are actually quite a few bikes in the same price range as the 7100. Giant makes a couple good ones and if you read through some posts on these boards, you'll come across several more. I hope this helps in your decision making process.

anything will get stolen if it's not locked with the heaviest lock you can find. i had a girls mountain bike stolen from me (locked up) while i was watching a movie. get a cheap bike if you have to, but don't skimp on a quality lock.

Many NYC commuters go for old 10-speeds. They can be found in dumpsters, yard sales, police auctions and church sales for well under $50. Search the forums for member "Dahon.steve". He has all the dirt on NYC commuting. I think he uses a $60 WalMart bike.

If I were in your shoes I would keep the Trek far away from the city.

yeah, you're right. maybe i'll swipe my sister's old 3-speed from my parent's house some weekend. it was barely used, and pops says it's still in great shape -- probably needs new tires and a thorough wipe down, but i don't have any qualms about riding a chickbike. especially not for free!
