I've seen this mentioned before - does anyone know what the deal is with this crankset? It's never in stock anywhere but it's still listed prominently on the shimano web-site

My LBS ordered one for me and said it wouldn't be any problem at all, but i'm a little skeptical as you don't seem to be able to buy the thing *anywhere*

I'm building up a touring bike - i'm not dead set on this crankset or BB but i want those ring sizes and i want something sturdy.

The other option i was looking at was a Sugino with a square taper BB. It'd be cheaper that's for sure.

It's a 48-36-26, i'd be installing it in a 68mm bb shell with a 9sp cassette. Friction shifting via barcons.

The crank selection question may be better suited for the touring forum but i figured i ask here about the part..

thanks in advance for any advice or feedback about this!

It does look like a rare varient of the XT crank, but there's at least one US online vendor advertising it:

Whether or not it's available is another question.

I'd say that any of the Sugino cranks on a conventional square-taper BB should be OK. You're not going off-roading on it, are you?

what's wrong with sugino square taper crankset with shimano UN-5x or UN-7x cartridge square taper?

sugino recommends 110mm wide spindles, but 107mm spindle will be better for touring bikes.

It's not many places in the US market, because americans don't bicycle tour, or something. But it seems to be in stock at SJS, Wiggle, etc. The exchange rate with the GBP is such that can be cheaper to order things shipped from the UK these days. Last order I got from Wiggle arrived pretty quickly and they offer free shipping with a minimum value order.
