Mountain Biking - GT avalanche frame...what to do with it????

Hello

I have just bought a medium (18'' ) GT avalanche frame, what would you guys suggest i put on it, i am trying to keep it simple but still look/perform good. so i wont be going the disk brake direction, some good v's will be ok...

any links/suggestions would be great, this is my first build so i have alot to learn, when i get the frame tomorrow i will post some pics..

i rebuilt my hardrock and it cost me more than that for just the drive train, wheels, and tires.

do you already have a fork?

if you've never done a build before i recommend bringing the frame to the LBS, tell them your budget, they will help you pick out parts that will fit on your frame. my LBS has a "bargain bin" of used or older parts for under 5 bucks. that's good for parts like stems, bars, seat posts. I'm sure if you spend the money to buy all the parts from them they should help you put it together for free. at least thats why mine would do. and its good to support the local buisness.

Edit. Just noticed that it doesn't come with any of the cockpit pieces. But throw in one of the Sette combo deals and I still fee like its a better deal.

Swap the wheels/tires/tubes to the 26in of your choice and the brakes to SD5 if you want.

Just messing around with it I came up with what I feel is a decent build for 548 out the door.

Thanks for the replys, im on a bit of a budget so the question was more to set me on a guide line of what parts i need for the build,
i think i will be going with the sram x7 front and rear derailers and trigger shifters, i have been looking at cranks aand bottom brackets and seen the octalink bracket and crankset, whats the best combo for the money?
as i said previously this is my first build, i have got myself or can get the tools needed like crank pullers etc.. for the build, but i will be needing lots of help.

for now im still gathering parts, some second hand and some new, i live in holland so the biking scene is huge here and sometimes i can find good parts for cheap. I have been past the local bike store and most of the stores here in amsterdam only sell/repair the old dutch style bikes, the MT/racer bike stores all seem real expensive and dont offer much help..seems as if your not riding one of 'there' bikes they dont pay much interest.. so i will ve using this forum and youtube to get me through the build.

the GT frame arrived today and its looks great, i am very happy with it, but i noticed that there are different versions of the GT avalanche, can anyone tell me what year/model this is?

tomorrow i will be getting handlebars from starbar and a KORE stem, i am going to be using the LX shimano V brakes in the black and gold colour, are these any good?

will post pics as stuff arrives.

Damn that is a good deal!!! I would just want to upgrade to the BB7's though. Really sweet looking frame. I keep saying it, and I will say it again, one of these days I am going to build me up a rad GT.:ride:

Looks like you have a 2000 model frame. That was a really nice bike back then, still is.
