Road Cycling - Anybody Here A "Regular" At The NYC Central Park Loop?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Don't worry I'm not that good either. I'll be riding probably in the afternoon after the rain washes all the slick off the road.
I'll be on the blue giant, either with my blue jolt cola jersey or cheap yellow jersey depending on what dries first heh.

BTW: CRSO, how's the central park loop? Is it open to traffic?

Ummm.... where to start, where to start..... First an answer to the original question, used to be a CP regular (2-3 hrs Sat, Sun) now a PP regular (rode at 5 this morning because of a conference starting at 7).

That said. Yeah CP is ~6 miles and PP is 3.5 miles, but it gives a good workout. What's wrong with riding a circuit 5-8 times? NYC has had it's share of champion cyclists grow up riding on those loops. It seems from you post that you look down on our fair parks. It's what we got and like I said before it can give a killer workout if you do it right.

I'm afraid I lost you there. What does riding a nice or a "not" nice bike has to do with riding in a park. If anything, there are more "nicer" bikes there then on the street. Do you think that people ride because they want to see other people's bikes ?

nothing, i suppose, but doesn't it get boring? One of my big attractions to cycling was the fact that I could ride for 30+ miles and see things that I wouldn't normally get to see running. I love being able to get out in the country and moo at the cows on farms 20 miles from my house. I think that if I lived in NYC, where the city extends for quite a few miles, I would never have been tempted away from running by cycling.

as for the nice bikes comment, i wasn't trying to imply that at all. Where I live, there are a few lakes with bike paths around them. however, since people run there, and walk their dogs, and walk with their strollers, bikers going 15+ mph are generally frowned upon. as a result, many people who are real cyclists stay off of the paths. the only people that ride on the paths (around here) are people with hybrids, who generally dont ride for more then a few miles at a time.

Central Park goes through the Upper West Side where you'll need to make over 100K a year to live in a 1 bedroom apartment. When there folks get on their rides, you'll see some real expensive bikes of every brand. You'll also see Huffy's riding in the park but in general, bring a camera because on a warm Sunday afternoon, they'll be nice bikes everywhere.

I cant speak for CP but PP is a very nice park and pretty challenging(that last climb is rough!). I try to ride PP once a month(bringing a bike on the LIRR is a pain).

It's 6.2 miles superman. People tend to be a little loaded in this city and the most expensive bikes I've seen are there all day, every day. I go there for the view and Columbus Circle is my back door so the park is about 20 seconds from my condo. There is no reason for me to not go there.

Hey slvoid. The park is open to traffic during the weekdays but at night, the entire loop is closed (except for the occasional park worker or cop). It's very very nice at night. When the traffic is there, the lanes are large enough for everyone so it's never a problem. Plus it's a nice bonus to race the cars.

I live in Columbus Circle which is the southwest corner of Central Park. Because of the new Time Warner building, the real estate skyrocketed around here. I own but I know you need to make 40X the monthly rent required (eg: rent 2k per month, you need to make a minimum of 80k per year, etc...).

I see so many expensive bikes around here. There is a Maybach out front of my house right now. I love those cars.

Um. OK.......That's your opinion of what a “ride” should be like (not in park). Did idea of: "different people like to ride in different places" came across your mind at any point in time? Maybe I don’t like to moo back at cows. Maybe I like to bark back at dogs.

Don’t base everything on your experience. Another thing, I understand that word “park” has a vague, meaning and everyone has his/her own interpretation. But since you never been to any of these parks (Central Park, Prospect Park), what makes you think that runners, joggers, ect.. and cyclist share the same path?

We talking about Prospect park , not Central Park, right So:

Only going against the traffic flow/clockwise, it's possible to have more then 1 climb. If you go with the flow, there is only 1 good and last one. The one that goes all the way up to Brooklyn Public Library on the east Drive side of the park.

John Jay is a good school. I always get coffee at the Starbucks on 59th & 9th and there are a lot of the students in there.

We (me and my girl) always run into him while getting coffee at our place (not Starbucks). He's always around. He owns the top 4 floors in the building next to us.

Just curious.

I'm a regular, but also a loner.

I go about 5 days a week (went this morning and did 6 laps), when there is no rain. I usually ride to the park from my apt. in Corona and do laps.

I'm an Asian guy, about 215lbs. riding a Specialized Langster single-speed.

I don't wear cycling clothes because I'm not hardcore enough, usually wearing regular athletic shorts and black shirt, black socks, black Adidas. I usually sit and drink my iced tea near the benches by Sheeps Meadow & Tavern on the Green after my ride (around 8pm lately).

Say Hi if you see me, if I look mean, but that's just because my ass is sore from all the miles (and my pride is hurting because I'm slow!)

It's pretty long, as you start you see a big field on your right, then a field on your left. On the descend theres a park exit with a large arch.

i'm a PP regular and CP on the weekends or when i have some more time on my hands. i'm usually limited to an hour and a half or so for riding. sometimes early mornings before work, sometimes evenings.

just look for this heap:

the loops do get a little old after a while, usually about 40 miles for me, but i know guys who regularly do centuries in CP - around 16 laps.

and to the guy who asked if people actually rode nice bikes there - except at races, you will rarely see a collection of nicer bikes being paraded around.

I tried only 1 lap at PP last week, again I had just gotten back on biking for 5 days before that so dont laugh. I did around 9-10 on the hill because I didn't expect there was a hill :D. i take that hill at around 17-18 when i'm juiced up and feel like pushing it, otherwise around 14.5-15 and slower when i feel like grinding a bigger gear out of the saddle and making my quads burn.

anyway, i've been in PP daily for the last 5 or so evenings. it's hard to do anything but lower speed cruising with all the kids darting back and forth across the road, scooters, volley balls flying into the road, etc.
