Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hello, I am a 19 year old college student who enjoys biking (and it is a necessity; no car/motorbike >.>), and after going through a bike every year or two I am interested in purchasing something more durable; and the CX bikes seem to be my answer.

To elaborate on my riding style; I beat on my bikes as much as you can given the enviroment (usually pavement, lots of cracks, sidewalk ledges etc), and push them hard, my last bike (a BMX style one) had two chains snap and then the frame got dented so I ditched it.

I have ~300$ to spend on a bike, that goes fast and can withstand a decent beating, and don't want one of those 40lb mountain bikes.

Is the CX bike what I am looking for?
And can I get a non-**** one for my low price range (just looking thru the forums most seem to be much more expensive.)

~Thanks for any responses

At your price range, you're best bet is a used mountain bike.

i'm new to this side of bikeforums, but i wholeheartedly agree. I would seriously doubt that you could find a cross for 300 bucks ... even used and in horrible shape.

Get on craigslist (or ask around) and look for a used mountain bike and switch out the tires.

a used single-speed cross bike? if your roads/paths are that horrible, maybe get a used mtn bike and then put slicks on it?

Yeah, used mountain bike with 1.5 inch slick tires on it. You won't find a cross bike for that price.

Increase your budget a bit and you might find
something, I just bought a Tricross Singlecross
for 375.00 off craigslist. It was an 08 model that had very
little use.

Even if the OP could find a cyclo cross bike he could afford, the way he rides sounds more appropriate for a mountain bike. I expect a cheap mountain bike would weigh only a couple of pounds more than a cheap cross bike, maybe 32 pounds vs. 28 or so.

If you're breaking BMXs, a cross bike will be no match for you.

+1... If you're looking for a hucking bike, A CX'er is not for you.

Anyone who breaks a BMX bike must be a BEAST!
