I have an old (1985) Ross road bike, which I took into my Trek dealer for a major tune-up. I have had the bike five years, and never did anything to it. I put about 1,500 miles a year on it. The dealer replaced the head set and crank bearings and cleaned the wheel bearings and re-lubed them (these are not the sealed type). He also took off all the shifting parts and cleaned them. He also replaced the cables with stainless steel and the guides.
When I got the bike back, I couldn't believe the difference. It was like having a new bike it was so smooth, and well worth the investment.
