whilst out on the trails?

I was riding around with an earphone in the other day. First time I've ever ridden whilst listening to music and I found that on a few sections it really helped me loosen up on some sections. Just wondering if anyone else does it/has tried it?

Edit -> If you do what do you listen to? I had all mine on random, which consists of a tincey amount of R&B, quite alot of rock of various types, some stuff which I really don't know how to catorgarise and a shameful mix of dance music.

I do, but only in one ear, so I can hear horses and whatnot on the trail. I loose a bit from some music only in one ear, but thats fine.

I agree about it 'loosening" you up. Turn to favorite song before a long climb, helps make it to the top. Kinda like at the gym. Helps keep you going.

Meh, I've never seen a thread asking this before yet I've seen 3 "roadie turned mtb'er" threads in the past week, go and make pointless comments to them instead.

A couple of years back I was in Breckenridge in early June and the trails were basically empty. I got tired of only listening to the rims deflecting off roots and the Propedal blowing off. I remembered I had that my phone had some mp3s on it and a pretty decent speaker. For about the last 10 or so mile I was cruising the Flumes listening to the Cure playing from my phone in my Camelbak. Not the best riding music but it was still pretty good.

never done it mtnbikin, and i don't do it on seroius road rides, but I do listen to music when i commute somtimes, I'm not riding as hard so it doesnt' seem as unsafe, at least compared to normal road riding, never really thought of it for mtnbikin, may have to try it. I also have headphones in my ski helmet and i love that.

this topic hasn't been beaten to death and it might cause and interesting discussion to ease my bordom, no search required.

I hear enough music/talk/noise on a daily basis that I really enjoy the break from all that when I'm riding.

I hit my own groove listening to the tires rolling through the dirt and detritus, the sound of my bike in its machinations. Most of all I enjoy the sounds of nature (or the silence) when I stop to take it all in.
That is one of the reasons I ride MTB.

And yes, the subject has been discussed here numerous times.

Only the music I carry around inside my head - - which is usually Boston, Molly Hatchet or maybe Foo Fighters or Emery.

Of all people to give someone else **** about a post I would not have expected it to be you, considering your history.

Kinda funny.

I wasn't giving "****" to anyone. It's way easier to just "search" before starting a thread. Normally you will find plenty of answers, rather than waiting for replies. I do it a lot. That's the main reason there are very few threads started by me. Someone else is usually asking a question everyone else may be looking for answers to.

Very simple.

You know it's right. I was just making a suggestion, not a criticism. But then, this is the interwebz and people will see only what they want to hear. Happens every minute of every day.

Sorry you are having a bad day. Breathe.

YJ, you know as well as I do, the guy who's shed got pilfered was looking for someone to alienate. I just happened to be the guy holding the number he was looking for.

Why is it with you guys that every post has to become a personal attack. One would think that since we all like to bike, we would all be amiable to each other. Hmmm.....

Anyway, I hope the OP finds his answers.

I'm off to go play in the mud. No jobs to finish today, need some sun.

Can you stop arguing. I don't have a clue what your on about with a search button and don't know why your attempting to be patrionising but w/e. I also don't see why other people are insulting you but I'm really not bothered. Started it partly to give other people the idea and small talk, rather to digging up a thread from the search and getting told off by everyone for that.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand.

I do like getting out in the peace of nature, and whenever I go up into the hills in wales on my bike thats what I do. The local mountain bike track is in the middle of the city though, so it's either music or listen to engines and horns.

I have no idea. I was just making a suggestion. There is no "search button," although this forum does have a search feature. I use it constantly to find local areas and some suggestions on riding and being a diabetic.

Honestly, I really don't give a rip one way or the other. I was just suggesting a way of saving yourself some time, but it appears that you were looking more for opinions, not actually looking for answers.

Whatever makes you happy is what is important in the end.

I listen to earplugs on the trails when I know I'm the only rider around. I usually take a player with me, but use it less than 10% of the time.

Be cool, ride safe.

I've only listened to music on the trails once just because I usually ride with a few friends, but yeah, it does loosen you up. Mostly AC-DC, Led Zeppelin, Boy Sets Fire, Flogging Molly, and some other punk/rock stuff.

I only listen to music when riding my road bike. Lots of different stuff-right now I am really into The Killers, any album.

I get a bit worried if I listen to music on the road. I left in the one I had from the trails and it wasn't too bad, but I wasn't going far.

i listen when riding the road bike, usually with friends on the trails so the conversation is as good as music.

i like maylene and the sons of disaster though when it gets to the point of legs feeling like jello. makes you go go go!

p.s. search is over-rated.

I love listening to music when road riding or on the trails solo. I generally listen to stuff like OTEP, Rebel Meets Rebel, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth, Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Broken Hope.....you know, classic rock:D

On the road, no...I don't there is just simply too much traffic...and it's actually illegal to boot. On the trails, yes I do, when I am alone. Pretty rude (for me at least) to "tune out" while riding with friends. Of course, you'll never convince my 12 year old daughter that it is bad form..lol. Me, I like electronica and ambient trance mostly...but if I'm in the mood..I like pretty much anything from the 70's and 80's too. Not a country fan though.

It's illegal for me to have headphones or anything else that can obstruct my "awareness..."
so no, I don't listen to music, But nature has its own music, and that's enough for me.... except for the road riding I've been doing...... then all i hear is the growl of my knobby tires getting worn down =(

Ye haw!

I played in a country band for a few years.

I love all the titles for country tunes, what a hoot!

"If You Don't Believe I'm Leavin', Count The Days I'm Gone"

not actually country, but: "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away?"

I'll PM you a band aid...lol! ;) I will contradict myself though...I DO love Johnny Cash and some of the "old" stuff, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, etc... Today's country....is NOT country music.

When I owned earbuds I used to get headaches from listening to too much music. I'd wear 'em when working (landscaping stuff, so I can), when riding to/from school, on the trails, on the roads, wherever. I'd average something like 3-4 hours a day...

My headphones broke (surprise surprise), and the headaches went away! They were only mild ones, I'll admit... nothing to really complain about, but I like the sound of the birds singing on the trails and I like to keep an ear out for my buddies behind me! I also like the grinding sound of my road bike. Old derailleurs and a used chain = lots of noise... makes me feel like I'm achieving something on that bike. Grrrr.... here I come catching up to you... grrrrr... :P

Now I wear proper headphones. They sound better anyways! I just can't wear 'em with a helmet or with hearing protection overtop.

Nope, can't do it.

I'm a bloke, so I can only do one thing at a time (so my wife says, so I gotta maintain the rep). In fact when I braking with both hands, the pressure eases up on one when I think about the other.

If I listened to music while riding, I'm bound to hit something... whether it's a tree or a high note remains to be seen...

And to OP I don't listen to music. I think if I loosened up to much I'd hurt myself.

I've secretly been stalking you all your life. Remember 15 years ago when you went to Glamour ShotsŪ for your portfolio and resumė pictures? Oh yeah, baby! That was me. Of course I was wearing a "fat-suit" with a couple of big ol fake cannons up there, but I was a master of disguises.

Sometimes when riding solo. Never on the road or group ride sort of things.

Most recent, some newly downloaded Mogwai, Bob Mould, Morcheeba, Massive Attack, and Silversun Pickups.
