So this question may have been asked many times, but I'm going to ask again. I have a mid '90s Trek 1400 road bike that long ago the Shimano RSX brifters bit the dust. So I'm finally getting around to fixing it and lo-and-behold, there ain't that much 7-speed stuff around anymore. After parusing the net for a few days I came to the conclusion that an 8 speed shifter would work on my 7 speed derailleur/cassette, however when the package came (I got shimano SL-BS50-8's) it says prominately on the back of the package that it will not work with a 7 speed derailleur. So as a novice bike mechanic at best, I'm assuming that that means indexed mode will not work, however on the friction setting I can use these things. Will that work?
Additionally - I would like to make indexed mode work if I ever wanted to sell the bike. Can I replace a 7speed cassette with an 8 speed (and derailluer, if i can find one)? Sorry for all the amatuer hour questions, but hey, i'm an amatuer!
THanks in advance!!
