Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Civility in the site

I'm relatively new to BikeForums, although view regularly. For the past ten years or so I have been a regular participant on three or four boating sites.

I must say I'm really impressed with the civility and common courtesy shown on BF. The boating sites get real nasty, real quick. It's interesting to watch participants slog in the mud, but after a while it becomes real tedious.

I mostly am on the Clydesdale and over 50 Forums as I unfortunately qualify for both. The Road cycling forum can degenerate into a urinating contest occasionally. I attribute that to a lot of young guys with keyboard courage.

So, just a note to say it's nice to see productive, civil, informative discussions taking place.

I can't speak to how it is in the 50+ forum, but I we tend to keep things pretty calm here in the Clydes/Athenas Forum.

I agree, the civility and courtesy shown here is very high. There seems to be minimum of intervention from the moderators, too. Simply a healthy community providing mutual support.

Actually, I've noticed that other internet bulletin boards tend to have one of two personalities: either they degenerate into shouting matches, or they're so saccharine-sweet as to be cloying. This forum in general, and the Clydes and 50+ in particular tend to hit a middle ground of civility.

I agree with prxmid. It's nice to be able to go to a cycling site that actually talks about cycling and there is no flaming going on. Very nice in deed.

Give the roadies a chance... there is no doubt that a few of them are jerks, but most of what you may see as sniping is done tongue in cheek. There is a lot of chest thumping over there that I can only take in small doses. I sometimes wonder if some of them are over-compensating...

However, for the most part, if you read the posts with a sense of humor you will see much of it in a whole new light.

But yeah, here, the 50+, and Classic & Vintage are all great forums if you happen to fit into the right demographics or interests. Very friendly, helpful and informative.

Welcome aboard. I agree with you about the good manners and civility displayed here on the clyde/athena forum. It's the main reason I decided to stick around. Also, pay no attention to zoste, he's a roadie in training.....lol

Like all groups there are idiots everywhere and they tend to converge. I have found the clyde/athena group to be very nice. The roadie group is a little different but I take my shots with a pinch of salt and try not to hand them back.

Agreed, also add the S&A forum to the list of sometimes (but not always) dicey waters. Regardless, welcome to the nicest part of BF from me as well!!!!:thumb:

While attempting to build my monster quadrecumbent I bounced around the newsgroups for a while to find information. I found most of the people nice except for one individual who didn't like anything anybody else said even if they agreed with him. I know you'll find that every where but this guy was a complete jerk. He hated recumbents and thought they shouldn't be allowed on any road and had even made the "joking" comment that he'd either like to shoot or run over any recumbent he saw on the road. Now me being a nice guy I thought that with his past tirades and general nasty behavior that those kind of comments weren't needed. So, when I and others in that newsgroups expressed our dislike in a polite way he said we would be next. Now, I'm a computer guy and have been for years. I'm not a super whiz kid but I do know how to find out info. I contacted his ISP and the FBI for making what amounts to today as terrorsitic threats. A week later he popped back in the newsgroups fit to be tied SCREAMING about his ISP cutting him off and a visit by the FBI. Needless to say he didn't come back and the newgroups was better off without him. A difference of opinion is great and so is a healthy discussion but when it turns to that kind of talk no one needs it.

We are all civil because we all live it. We know the pain of the "Cat calls, " we know we have to spend more for a 40 spoke rear wheel, we have to break parts and report what went wrong.

It's all good here; We're trying to help one another get better.

Actually, he meant A&S, or Advocacy and Safety, and I have to grant access to P&R. It requires a minimum of 30 days post time, which you have covered. I'll authorize you for P&R in a minute.

Just like the OP I was impressed with how nice everyone is around here, even with the new guys (like me) getting into the sport. Most forums, if not all, that I've encountered are much less friendly, ESPECIALLY with the new guys. I mostly bounce between the Clydes, Roadies, and General forums. There must be something about cycling that makes people fun and happy. This can't be legal. LOL

And what is P&R?

P&R is Politics and Religion. It's where we generally send controversial threads, etc. It's kept in a lead lined vault buried under NORAD, 3000 feet beneath Cheyenne Mountain. :p

I think the reason that the Clyde's forum and the 50+ forum are the two most civil forums on this site, is because most people who post in one also qualify for the other. :thumb: So you are dealing with the same people. I too check these two forums, because I qualify for both. Usually the only other forum I check regularly is the Commuting forum, and I have not seen any problems in there, however, I have only been a member since April.

This forum is so nice... no-one has yelled at me when have wandered in here by accident after just reading the thread title and if the 50 plus folks knew I wasn't really 65 they'd give me the boot for sure.

imo, the Commuting forum is very nice too --- that's where I've been spending most of my time these days -- come and check us out (if you haven't already)

I think we tend to be more personable in the Clydes & Athena’s forum, most likely because we do tend to catch some grief from other cyclist and society in general, so we tend to identify with each others problems somewhat more in this forum.

As far as 50+ forum, I think by the time you reach that age, there is a certain wisdom that most people achieve, to one degree or another, that one tends to start thinking about the whole War (metaphorically speaking) instead of the Battles, or Skirmishes in life…

Personally I really like the Classic & Vintage forum, and the Utility Cycling forum, and The Bicycle Mechanics Forum as well. Commuting is nice as well, but I can’t relate to it right now, so I feel like a poser posting there… :(
