The article seemed to be heavily edited. I wish there were more info.
Maybe we had the same conductor yesterday on the 4:30 train from East Norwalk to Grand Central? There were about a half dozen bikes in one car - mostly in the entranceway. The conductor grumbled a lot as he stepped over the wheels and said we should've notified Metro North in advance. But Sound Cyclists, organizers of the Bloomin' Metric, said Metro North had waived bike restrictions for the day.... Did they forgot to tell their conductors about it?
Whatever. Nobody actually asked for a permit and we arrived at Grand Central without any further complications, even if some of us had to stand all the way.

Metro north conductors can tell you to get off for any reason they want to. In general you will not be allowed on during rush hr, or when the Yalies are going to the airport(which can be any hr). If you have a full sized bike, dismantle it and wrap the parts in a painters drop cloth and bungee cords. They probably will not tell you to leave even during rush hr.

Not the worst idea. The conductor didn't seem to take issue with the guy carrying a cello in a hardshell case.
