Fifty Plus (50+) - Mrs. Smith, You Are Doomed!

For fear of triggering mass waves of immigration and driving up home prices in our locale, I have been withholding this important story for some time. But journalistic ethics have finally prevailed.

I am pleased to announce that our state now boasts a new product that will add immeasurably to our status and add to every child's self-esteem. Tourism and export revenues are bound to soar. No it isn't football or corn. I speak of course of PIE!

Our state now proudly boasts a world-class piemaker within its borders! The Village Piemaker of Eustis, NE has been providing product to my supermarket for several weeks now and my extensive product testing suggests that corporate piemakers are currently shaking in their boots. A+ ratings for all except Gooseberry... too tart for my taste.

Prediction: we will soon be bringing in kids from Cali. and Fla. on piemaking scholarships. Fleets of pie export trucks will soon be rolling, no doubt! More pics are forthcoming.

Mrs. Smith was doomed years ago, when she sold out to Kellogg, who in turn sold her to another, who in turn closed down the factory in Pottstown, PA and moved them south, where they are no doubt being massed produced by machine and illegal immigrants. Not that there's anything wrong with that. And while I'm ranting, Breyer's made the best Vanilla ice cream to top that pie with, won national awards; but they too sold out. I don't even recognize what they call Vanilla today.

I feel sorry for all those folks not in NY, Western Mass & Western Vermont - you don't have Stuarts shops. They are all over the place here - like 7-11s in the south. You want Ice cream - these guys make the best! Flavors to die for (my favorite - Peanut Butter Pandamonium). Breyers on there best day couldn't hold a candle. They also have the best milk - most people I know won't even buy milk at the gorcery store - they make a special trip to Stuarts.

You might try a trip west on route 23. A trip to Shirks also involves numerous stops at roadside stands to check the pie selection. One near Shirks bakes some real good cookies for ride food.

My wife and I rode Acadia National Park. The "Carriage Roads" are wonderful. We had a really great time. Be sure to take the Park Service ferry/tour of Cranberry Island. It was just great and we had a character as a tour guide/ranger.

I feel sorry for all those folks not in NY, Western Mass & Western Vermont - you don't have Stuarts shops. They are all over the place here - like 7-11s in the south. You want Ice cream - these guys make the best!

I don't feel we are lacking any here. We have Chocolate Shoppe ice cream. They have 110 flavors and most are Super Premium ice creams with 20-30% butterfat. I only eat it about 5 times a year.

Thanks! - I had not started to do my bike planning for the trip - I was considering my road bike but now I think I'll take my mtb bike. Looks like the crushed stone carriage trails will be a lot of fun.
My original plan was for my wife to drop me off in Vt and I would ride to our friends house in NH where we would visit - then she would drop me off in Maine I would meet her in Acadia.

Ohio Amish are well known for their baked goods. Here's a place I have ridden to a few times. Although I'm not a big fan of Amish cooking, the blueberry pie is out of this world.

The ride up Cadillac Mountain is done by many, although we didn't. Good climb. The view is unbelievable.

Thanks for your reply to my post. FYI, I would bet Colo. Springs is not terribly much farther from the piemaking source (Eustis, NE) than Omaha. I'll bet your supermarket could stock Village Piemaker products if they were asked! They are fabulous! No canned fillings and crust is to die for. :thumb::thumb::thumb:

Apple is splendid. Cherry the same. Raspberry-Peach may be even better. Blueberry is fabulous. But Black Cherry: it just may be the best of the lot!

Oh, what a relief! Even after 40 years of marriage, I'm still always startled by references to "Mrs. Smith" and tend to take them personally.
