Folding Bikes - Rim tape

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have these rims http://www.alexrims.com/product_detail.asp?btn=2&cat=2&id=71 ERTRO 406 and Kojak tires. The wheels came originally with Marathon tires and 14mm cloth rim tape.
I can find at my LBS 11mm (too narrow) and 17mm (too wide) cloth tapes. (the spoke holes are 8.5mm).
What is the optimal tape width for my application and any idea where I can find cloth tape between 11mm and 17mm?
Thanks,
Kam

Go for the 17 mm rim tape.

Interesting idea. I will give it a try.
It may solve the problem of the tape wandering inside the rim and exposing the spoke holes and also it may provide more clearance to remove the tires (which are currently very tight).

I'm waiting on velo plugs for the 451's on my Swift.
Never even seen'm, but hopeful they'll work. : )
use some sissors!
I just tried it and it seems doable. Thanks. Before posting the original message it tried trimming the 17mm tape with a X-acto knife but it did not go well and left marks on the rim.
Anyway, I ordered the Veloplugs so i will leave the the wheel with the existing 11mm tape until the plugs will arrive.

I have now the veloplugs for few hundreds miles and they seem to work very well. The are smooth, conform to the round shape of the rim, are low profile, stay in place and hold the tire pressure with no problem.
My only complain is that on my rims, they are hard to remove and I have not manage yet to remove them without destroying them. The spoke holes in my rims are 8.5mm which is at the lower end of the yellow veloplugs range. The standard ones (red) may work on my rims better but I have not tried it.
