Another reprise of another sad song of the Bush legacy: my wife lost her job and I'm forced to begin selling off some of my bikes to help meet some of our expenses till she finds another one. First one on the block is this early-70's Ted Williams Free Spirit. If it wasn't a few centimeters too small for me you'd have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands. Some of the details:
Reynolds 531 Frame and fork made by Puch--56cm
Shimano Crane RD
Shimano Titilist FD
New Chain
Shimano 333 Stem Shifters
NOS Belleri stem--French
Nitto Moustache Bars with new cork wrap and Velox bar-end plugs
NOS Modolo Gold Anodized brake levers
Universal 61 Centerpull Brakes
New Housings and Stainless Cables
Mint Araya Alloy Rims with Shimano oiler hubs--like butta
IRC 27x1.25 Tires
New Velo Orange Stainless Fenders
Very Nice Brooks B-17
For the record ebr898 has the right of first refusal on this as it was through his generous effort that it came into my hands. It's fully-tuned and trued by the best lbs mechanic in town. I'm asking $375 shipped and insured. If you think that's too much make me a reasonable offer.

Sad to hear about your wife's job loss. Hopefully, you guys recover soon and you don't have to part with much.
I'm about to enter into unemployment myself as my fiance and I move to Chicago for a job for her. Fortunately, she will be make a reasonable salary. Although I feel my current job is very secure, I just can't afford her school loans.

Unfortunately I'm not in a position to purchase this beauty, but I just wanted to comment on what a beautiful bike it is. Whoever gets it is one lucky guy/gal.

How much of the bike is original? Are the wheels and/or gears the same as what came on the bike originally?
Whether they are or not, I think the selection is appropriate to the bike... I am just curious.

Darwin--
Ted came with a set of 27" steel wheels and a five-speed freewheel that were less than pretty; the replacement Araya alloy wheels/Shimano hubs came off my 77 Trek TX-300 and are in excellent condition with QR levers versus the older bolt-ons. The bars/stem/Modolo levers were my addition to replace the low-end bars and levers with the skull-puncher stem that was on the bike. The Velo Orange fenders were also added along with the Universal 61 brake calipers. With the exception of the wheels, I've still got all the original equipment that came installed.

And the deal has been made...
Except for a potential ceremonial last ride before packaging, the bike will next be ridden in Pennsylvania, in a slightly modified configuration.

Just a quick spin around the church parking lot across the street and a few muffled sobs, content in the knowledge that Ted will be happy in his new home with Little Darwin.:D
