Hey everyone -

I found an amazing ride today and wanted to share it with you all, although I am sure some of you are already familiar with it. (I hope this is the right place for it)

I live in Passaic County NJ, north of Wayne so urban sprawl missed a few spots out here. There is a really nice stretch of country road that leaves Butler NJ towards NY State Line.

Here are the details:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&tab=nl

What to expect:

moderate to difficult (but relatively short) inclines
beautiful tree lined roads with limited traffic (not recommended for Rush hours)
awesome, awesome, awesome downhills.

Lakes, streams, tons of trees and fresh air and wildlife. (i almost ate it when I came around a blind corner to find a group a geese crossing the road)

Things to watch out for:

Blind corners
crazy NJ drivers
Heavy foliage so would not recommend dawn, dusk or inclement weather.

I recommend leaving from Hamburg Turnpike (moderately busy road) in Bulter and riding Otterhole road straight up to Greenwood Lake NY state line. If you look under google maps you can pick best route for you. I went all the way up and then back to Bulter. (sorry if I'm blowing up someone's private ride...)

Have fun, maybe I'll see some of you out there. The more riders we have the more cars will start to watch out for us :thumb:

Very familiar with the area you describe. You might also consider loops and stuff around Cupsaw/Erskine lakes with detours into Ringwood State Park. A very nice loop is rather than using Otter Hole to go towards Greenwood lake, you can also use Otter Hole to West Brook to connect with Ringwood Ave and take that towards Sloatsburg and into NY state further East. You can ride into Harriman State Park, do the triathlon loop there and ride back towards NJ for a 75-100mile ride, easily.... Heck, or for a change of pace, you can ride into private Tuxedo Park where you can oogle multimillion dollar homes and very little traffic, as it's a gated community..

cool thanks for the advice. I do some mountain biking at Ringwood St Pk, but I didn't realize I was missing out on all of these great roads. I will definitely check out the loop you mentioned. Sounds really amazing. thanks

Anyone interested in a road ride this Sunday 5/31??

I am planning on doing a casual road ride this Sunday. They are calling for good weather, so I was thinking about going to the Cupsaw/Erskine lakes area with detours into Ringwood State Park as Jay H recommended.

He recommends taking Otter Hole to West Brook to connect with Ringwood Ave and take that towards Sloatsburg and into NY state further East which is my planned route. I will be grabbing the GPS and hopefully get in 30 miles or so. If you are interested let me know. I am planning on leaving around 10AM to ??(whenever I run out of legs) from the gas station at the intersection of Otterhole Road and Westbrook Road.

Let me know, the more the merrier.
