so i am leaving for my 6 month stint in copenhagen in a few weeks. the terrible monster called school has finally let up and given me some time to research my fixed gear options before heading off. if anyone has any suggestions, advice or insults, it will all be appreciated. :)

what type of lock would you recommend? regular kryptonite u-lock? mini? new york chain?
would it be easier to find a used fixie (49-51cm) in copenhagen rather than shipping a bike over? price range? likewise, i could bring over wheels and cranks and build one up somehow.
is bike theft an issue with fixed gears? (i am debating on bringing my phil woods over or using my beater stock wheels on my khs)
is riding brakeless an issue? i read that i would need a light at night and reflectors on my bike. ick!
are there many fixie friendly shops?
do you know of any web forums specific to fixed gears in denmark?

likewise, if anyone from the forums is in the area from june 23rd until december 22nd, i would love to ride. i think i remember seeing someone from finland on here. (not nextdoor, but the same region.)

Who are you flying with? When I have overshipped back from Sweden with SAS they have given me a break. Talk with your airline.

A decent lock should be fine. Bike theft does happen but less so. People are much more open and less concerned with ripping somebody off. Try getting a bike when you are there. That should not be a problem at all. When I studied in Uppsala (Sweden), lots of people had these army issue tankers. They are not "cool" like a fixie but they definately have their own appeal and I wouldn't even mind having one for trucking around on. They are fixed and coaster breaks. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they had them in Köpenhamn too.

An old post had a Dane living in Sweden... He listed this as a Danish fixie site:

I am totally jealous. Would love to be there for the summer. It is the most beautiful time to be there and everybody is happy and drinking (oh, Carlsberg, lots of Carlsberg) and having a great time. Roskilde should be soon, too. Check it out if you can. It's one of the oldest and largest music fests in all of Europe.

Keep us posted. You can also PM if you have questions. I'll do the best that I can, even if I am a Swedish American... I know Sweden better, but have always had a great time in Denmark, too.

yay!

skitbraviking,
i've been planning on going to roskilde since i was accepted into the program. they just keep adding more and more acts to the program and it looks like one hell of a festival. i am flying with british airways and it looks like a bike can count towards my 2 bag allowance. i'm going to see what the price is if i paid the excess charge since i don't know if i can squeeze all my stuff into one large suitcase and a carry on. i was just figuring bringing a bike over would save some money in the longrun and also alleviate the hassle of running around for parts while in school. i still have a few weeks left to decide.

very cool. you can also bring two carry on bags, I am sure, so plan accordingly.

drink many Carlsberg's for me... My Copenhagen layover ritual is to land (approximately 7:30 am) and find myself a shrimp sandwich (yum, with free dill) and a Carlsberg or two. Great meal!

Enjoy and keep me posted. Would enjoy living precariously through your trip.

ephermalskin,
what months are you going to be in berlin? i was thinking of doing a trip through germany during my break in sessions over summer. if you want to visit copenhagen, i'd be more than welcome to show you around since it's not to far away. i'm going to be doing some touring while i am over there too if you'd like to join in.

I figure I could put half in each of your suitcases and then reconnect when you two meet up.

I am guessing, but no more than six hours by train.

when i was on my tour in europe, we drove it after crossing the ocean on a ferry. i don't think it took that long by bus. i will probably be hitting germany up again since i loved berlin so much. a guy from berkeley in the same program speaks german AND is bringing a bike too. maybe i'll convince him to get his touring on.
