Mountain Biking - Bashguard/Installation Questions

Hey Bikeforums! I haven't posted in a while, as a skiing forum and summer has taken over my time. Anyways, last year I bought my Giant Rincon. It has been a great bike for me. There is only one problem: the crappy plastic bash guard that came on it has broken due to large logs on the trails. I took it off yesterday, thinking not having it wouldn't be a problem, but it is. I was riding with pants on today and they kept getting caught in the crank/sprocket. I even have a hole now in my jeans. I know i know, i could just wear shorts, but it does get cold! And I would rather have a bash guard take hits instead of my chain rings.

So here comes the questions. My largest chain ring is 42T. I don't really want to take my large chain ring off because I'm quite lazy and don't want to go through the hassle. So I think i need a 42t or high bashguard, am i right? I know someone here has a blackspire guard thats for big rings, could that special someone post please? Anyone else would be great too. I know E13 is a good company, but the biggest i could find from them is 40T.

I also need to learn how to install it. Does it involve taking the crankset fully off my bike, or any special tools? IS there a park tools tutorial for this?

Last question. I need a website to buy a bashguard from. Im in Canada so any website with the company located in Canada would be great. Shipping and customs isn't exactly the most fun experience.

I know its 4 arm. Not sure on the 104 BCD part.

From the specs, it looks like they don't come with longer chainring bolts which you may need. The tools you'll need are the appropriate hex wrench and chainring nut wrench (although a large flat blade screwdriver may work). You can do the installation without removing the whole crankset. just work the bolts where they're accessible around the frame.

I use a couple elastic bands 'round the jeans when I ride... It doesn't have the same dork factor as tucking into the sock, and it doesn't let your pants get destroyed!

Two of those velcro cable organizer thingy'ma'bobs works too. I actually have an arm-band from some mp3 player case that I use.:thumb:

I have the exact same crankset (or close enough), you will need new backing bolts (the ones that come with it for some reason dont fit into the ones that come stock on the crankset, so dont even bother trying, you WILL go crazy). Just take the bolts that come with the bashguard to your LBS and find some backers that match. If you dont know what I'm saying, I dont blame you, I dont completely think it makes any sense.

But wouldnt you have to do something with the front derailer so that the chain doesnt come off the rings ?

Hahaha backer bolts as in the nuts? The things you spin around? Im just throwing around guesses right now :P

Alright, I didnt know there were different genders of them. Ill figure it out.

The guard comes with bolts that are visible from the out side, what you need are the bolts that are not visible from the back. I'm the exact way with names, I can recognize just about anybody I've seen but I have no idea what they are called.

You can adjust the FD. I ran a 1 x 9 setup using my FD as a chain guide. My problem was that whenever I'd hit the shifter by accident I'd shift off the ring. Now I've taken the shifter off and adjusted the FD with the adjustment screws and voila - problem solved!

Alright, so I have the bashguard figured out (i think). Now I'm also getting new pedals. I don't want to spend a ton, but i also don't want to keep replacing pins and things. Are sealed bearings really that much better to have? Im looking for replaceable pins. and medium to large sized platform. I've heard good things about the Sun Ringle Zuzu pedals, DMR V12 and the C bros 50/50 X pedals. These are all sort of in the 50 dollar range. Is there anything else on pricepoint that is cheap and like these pedals?

btw, could pedals on a bmx website like dancomp.com work? Would they have as much grip as a true mtb platform?

Those actually dont look that bad. Do you know where I can get the pins to replace them when I need to?

I didnt want to start a new thread about the same thing.
So i think im gonna stop being lazy and make my bike have 2 chain rings instead of 3. Today i was trying to take off the 3rd ring using a hex key. That didnt seem to work. Im not sure if i'm trying to turn the right bolt. So now i need some guidance.

The screw or whatever wont budge. I dont know if im trying the wrong hole or if im just too weak. Could somone please tell me how to take the last ring off?

And another question. What does a E-thirteen bashguard kit come with? The guard and some screws to go in place of the third ring?

Try a using a rubber mallet. Also, remember to hold the bolt in the back.

Hex bit in a 1/2" drive ratchet should get it broke loose. You may need to hold the back side with a chainring nut wrench.

Yeah, but sometimes the 3rd thing gets in the way anyways, and i never use it. This is a fun thing to try to do anyways.

I know i can get the third ring off now, meaning I will be ordering the parts soon. Im getting new pedals and a pedal wrench, along with the bash guard.

Im guessing the pedals are a standard 9/16 size. Im just not sure if this pedal wrench that apparently has 15 and 16 and 15 and 17 millimeter ends will work with the pedals. So any help here?

I need to buy like right now, so any info about the pedal wrench would be appreciated. I just need to know if it will work with the DMR V8's

I think I payed around 45$ shipped, and the thing is super beastly (and this is coming from a super cheapo).

I needed to keep my big ring because, while I have a road bike, I tend to just ride my mountain bike just in case I see something cool to huck off of.
