Yes, that Berkeley!
In college roughly 15 years ago, I did a bit of riding for a few years to get to school and the occasional foray into trail riding in the Berkeley hills. I had a Miyata mountain bike, I forget the model. It was sturdy but since I am heavy guy, I was constantly truing the rims.
Last fall, I decided to try something other than the gym to drop some pounds. My brother suggested I get back on a bike. His coworker, an avid mountain biker, had a 1997 Kona Manomano he had not ridden in a few years. I test rode it and bought it on the spot. At the time, I was afraid I would have to true the rims often but it has not been the case. My bike is fully suspended and I think that is the key. Plus, I have slicks on the rim and mostly ride on city streets and paved trails so no ten foot drops for me.
When I got my bike, I was about 355 pounds. Currently I am in the 320 range and dropping despite not riding much during the winter. I ride a mile or so each way to the train station during the work week and the occasional 5-6 miles on city streets or paved trail maybe every other weekend. Not much distance, I know, but I am riding a little more each week.
