Pics to come...

I bought a Giant Upland (http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?ItemID=45174&Type=bike) rigid mountain bike last night for $45. I plan on making it a commuter bike, so I can dedicate my Trek 820 to the trail.

I thought it was a higher end bike than it was. Of course, I wasn't expecting much, but I'm a little disappointed that its MSRP was $200.

That said, I would like to fix it up for as little money as possible, as long as the parts work and it gets me around town. I figure if I can't fix it up, or the cost isn't worth it, then I have a new parts bike. That or I fix it up and sell it to break even.

It was in pretty good shape until they broke the rear derailleur while moving. Then they just let it sit for about a year.

It definitely needs a new derailleur, brake pads and tires and tubes. The frame (where the derailleur attaches) is slightly bent inwards, so I'll have to straighten that out. The hubs and rims are good. The cables could use replacing.

What do you recommend?

Slick, thinner 26" tires. Usually a 1.5 slick with flat protection (Specialized Armadillo) works well for commuters. Get a rack and lights, don't spend a lot on a derailleur. A guy at the shop I work at commutes on a Shimano Tourney derailleur, which is cheap to replace and gets the job done. New cable and housing is fairly straightforward.

In that post, I asked a question that I ended up answering at the end. The "nevermind" was about that specific post. Sorry. I should have clarified. At the moment, I'm still debating on wether the bike is worth fixing up.FIN

Well, don't be put off by the $220 MSRP. That was 9 years ago, a 2000 model. I got a 2005 OCR2 in 2006 and the MSRP was $750, but I can't come anywhere close to that bike today for less than $1200.

The Upland is a steel bike so you should be able to straighten the rear DR mount. The link you gave doesn't show a picture for the 2000 model year but there is one for the 1999. Does your bike look similar to the 1999? That's not a bad looking bike. Should make a nice commuter IMHO.
