Ive had this Dawes bike for a little while and really like it. but i tried finding what Dawes it was on the internet and had no luck. one thing i couldn't get in the picture is that on the handle bars it says "Road champion and Sakae custom" can any one help me out and maybe even tell me what it could be worth? even though i would not part ways with it.http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/5876/sl270001l.jpghttp://img42.imageshack.us/img42/285/sl270002.jpghttp://img32.imageshack.us/img32/6515/sl270003.jpgunderneath the word brooks it says b72. http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/6731/sl270005.jpghttp://img41.imageshack.us/img41/7990/sl270007.jpghttp://img43.imageshack.us/img43/5530/sl270008.jpghttp://img38.imageshack.us/img38/648/sl270010.jpghttp://img39.imageshack.us/img39/2056/sl270011.jpg

Cottered cranks, nutted axles, gas pipe frame, steel seat post, and steel rims usually mean an entry level bike. Nice lug work and head badge!

If the brakes are original, they usually have an open date code on them (you have to remove the caliper from the bike, as it is on the back side). The stem will also have a date code, and possibly the handlebars and brake levers. But stem and handlebars may not be original.

written on the stem is "5355 L82"

Also written on the bottom corner of the frame where you attach the wheel, "ZR4024" is written

I've seen this Dawes locally, and have read how some of the Galaxy's can be good, but others not so much. Can anyone help identify this one?

Eagle55, Dawes made decent bikes, and a lot of models.
I think that they switched to the wreath style headbadge in the mid-seventies, so yours is older.
Here a link to a pre 1977 catalog: http://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/Dawes_mid_70s/
The 1977 catalog shows the wreath headbadge: http://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/Dawes-77/
I haven't been able to find a site with date codes based on serial numbers.
Try doing a search for Dawes and see what others Dawes people are riding.
Welcome to the club of proud Dawes owners.

Aside from the typical checks of cracks, wheels, shifters, etc., is there anything in particular I should be looking at when I go see that bike? I was trying to figure out the year so I could see what kind of equipment it has on it. I really am new to all of this, so I wanted to make sure the first bike I got would be serviceable until I really get things going.

I'm big and tall, 6'4", 230lbs, and so I liked the idea of the relaxed geometry of this Galaxy as a bike to get me going. Any further help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Alex
