Touring - How to Update Podcast Subscriptions on Bike Tour

Last year when I biked across the US I frequently listened to podcasts on my iPod during my downtime. It was great but the only problem was that I did not have my computer with me to update the podcasts in a timely manner. This year I am biking through Canada and I am trying to find a way around using iTunes for all my podcast updates.

Does anyone have any idea if there is an online program that can be used to update podcasts on public computers without downloading iTunes?

I assume other people who go on extended tours have also run into this problem. Gotta have my NPR...

It looks like you can download the podcasts directly from each show on NPR. You need to set you iPod to be an external hard drive. This way you can transfer the show on to it like any other piece of data. Not sure this will make it available on the iPod though. Apple is so affraid of copyright infrengment they prohibit legitimate use of material. You might consider something like SanDisk Sensa. It has an expansion port, FM tuner, and you can copy data onto it much easier than the more close Apple product. Something to consider.

Life would be so simple with the Ipod Touch.. I want one for my next tour....

Consider getting an iPhone or iPod Touch. Both units can download podcasts directly (best with WiFi access) without having to synchronize with a computer.

Also consider Slipstreamz (http://www.slipstreamz.com/content.asp?subID=8)for your helmet. They allow you to listen to music/podcasts/audiobooks while riding and still hear cars and people.

I have my helmet wired with headphones, slipstreamz, and an iPod Shuffle, which clips to the retention strap on the back of the helmet. It is a great set up because there are no wire to mess with.
