yeah, i've had the stock V-brakes on my bike for a while now and i think it's about time to upgrade. i've been doing some research and the two brakes that seemed the best were the two listed above, but i need some help deciding which one's to get

For whats it's worth, I have the Avid SD 7's Front and Rear. Hands down, the best breaks I've ever had.

The Arch Rivals are nice if your doing XC, the arch helps keep a straight brake arm motion, but the SD7s are also nice for the money.

I have the SD7 on the front of my bike and my aunt is using the Arch rivals. I don't really feel a difference in braking power or modulation.

I find that the Arch rivals offer a lot more power and it acts almost like a Carbon booster which help my flexy frame a lot.

I really like my Arch Rival 50s and they do feel more powerful than the SD7s but they can also limit tyre clearance if you're running big tyres. I'm running 2.1" with no problems though.

I've desided i'm probably gonna get the arch rivals but i just need to ask: whats the difference between arch rival 40s and 50s?

I'm not sure Avid makes a distinction anymore. I thought they consolidated all their Arch Rival designs and just rebadged the 50s. It used to be that the 40s had lower quality parts/material and were cheaper but since Arch Rivals aren't selling like they used to, I believe Avid just stripped all the submodels and are marketting only the 50s as the one Arch Rival product. They used to have Arch Rival Ultimates too with titanium parts and such I believe.

I like the Arch 40's I'm running on my commuter bike. In my humble opinion they're the best non-disc brake I've tried.
