Northern California - nevada city to downieville

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
My wife and I are headed on a short tour soon and are thinking of heading from Sacramento to Downieville , maybe even Sierra city. we have a route from Sacramento to Nevada City but are not sure about hwy 49 above Nevada City. How is the ride on 49? I can't seem to find much information on it. What about camping? Is this a bad idea?

Maybe you should post this in the touring forum. Some of those people have been everywhere!

Since you are from the Sacramento area, you probably already know that 49 from Auburn to Grass Valley is really dangerous. You may already know this, but Dogbar Road, Off Placer Hills road is a great option. Haven't ridden from GV to Downieville in a long time. As I recall, is is lightly traveled during the week. BBT is right. Check with Touring
Enjoy the journey

Might be worth checking with the Davis Bike Club listserv-I've seen discussion of Sierra routes in the past on it.
