I have a co-worker who seems to speak in only Internet-inspired phrases, mannerisms, cliches, and buzzwords.
If I hear or read "epic," "fail", or "this." ever again, I am going postal.
^this.
okay, realize that my retort was epic in the amount of fail it contains.
my bad.

I first heard hella while hangin' with the next door neighbors in my college dorm in 1989. They were from NorCal, so that jibes with the Wiki.
Hella can be used as a replacement for "hell of a", but usually isn't. It's typically used as an adverb, to mean "very."
They also turned me on to Oaktown's 357 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UGcwrscu50), while EVERYONE else was spinnin' Ice Ice Baby.

On a related note, who decided it was cool to call people ****** or ******bag again.
I could barely tolerate it in the late 70s, now I'm all crotchety and hating it more than ever.
EDIT: Wow, BF censors hate it as much as I do.

the funniest thing was when the christian kids were forbidden from saying "hella" and had to say "hecka". I totally wanted to record a parody christian punk rock album and call the group "hecka".
Hecka started to catch on for a minute in my town and I forbidden my children from saying the work hecka. I'd make them say hella.

but words like "fittin' to" and "y'all" do?;)
At least our friend in FL said they do there. I have yet to hear a Florida twang, but then, I only visit Cocoa Beach. I love twangs:love:
How did the term get tied to Shriners and circuses and parades and such is what I want to know?! I think it just goes to prove that all fezzes are evil, esp. if worn by overweight men in red vests driving go carts.

I thought Siu made it up. She was the first (and only for a long time) I heard using it. Until I finally fell victim of her evil plot and realized I was saying it too.
It's the same way I blame jsharr for the way I so often now use the phrase, Just sayin'.

hahaha! no, in laredo, texas, it's all about tex-mex. and that's most of the slang you'll hear there. i've yet to hear "fittin' to" and "y'all" in a regular conversation since i've been living here in austin for the past two years though.

My Grandma always said "fixin' to". Well, all of my Mom's side of the family from coal country West Virginia said it. "fittin' to" isn't necessarily a southern thing. I didn't hear that one 'til 1992, when I moved to the ghetto.
It's sad that someone can live in TX for two years and not hear y'all used in conversation. What's this world coming to? Of course, at least half of ATX came from somewhere else, right?

But if enough people use "irregardless" then it becomes a word for all intensive purposes.

But if enough people use "irregardless" then it becomes a word for all intensive purposes. Putting the prefix Ir before the word regardless effectively makes it a double negative; thus the meaning of the word becomes: "without without regard."
People that use the word, end up looking like a dolt.

i've been in texas all of my almost twenty years of life! i was just raised with a different culture, and i love it that way. moving to austin was a culture shock. i don't think i had ever seen so many white people in my life. and yes, maybe half of atx came from somewhere else, but who could blame them; it's awesome here.

for me, it started when my neighbor got some hella's for his truck when i was like 6 years old. dad was over there helping him run the wires, and the guy commented those are Hella bright! hilarity ensued.

Perhaps. But language is fluid, especially English. Most people could care less if a word is consistent with itself. Since many people will repeat words they hear without really understanding the meaning, over time the "wrong" words will be acceptable.

Wow, hella epic fail dude! If you could care less then you should probably do that. After you do that a few times you will get to a point where you COULDN'T care less.
