Saturday I'll be doing my first century attempt. I'm new to cycling (or at least been a long time since I've been riding regularly). I loved to ride when I was a kid, but got serious into American Football and bulked up to 300 pounds by the end of high school. I played through university, keeping my size on and now, at 28, I need to shed the once useful but now useless extra weight. I started at 290 in January and am down to 255 this morning.
So, this Saturday I'll be riding the Fatcyclist.com 100 Miles of Nowhere (http://www.fatcyclist.com/2009/04/23/register-now-for-the-100-miles-of-nowhere/), a charity ride that is intended to be done on rollers, an indoor trainer or an extremely short and boring course outside. Fatcyclist has managed to raise $20,000 for LAF with this event. I'm living in the Middle East so will be doing a flat, hot and sandy 100 miles on an access road at a race course here in Qatar. The road is about 1 mile with a roundabout on either end, so I'll have to do about 50 laps. I'm planning on starting at 3:00 AM to avoid as much heat as possible, shouldn't be a problem as the whole street is lit, we cycle there all the time after dark.
Any advice and encouragement is welcome and if you want to donate to the cause, go here (http://philly09.livestrong.org/apeterson).
