Touring - Touring southern Africa

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm planning on biking southern Africa in late 2005. It will include the southern 7 countries. I don't want to do it alone, so if you might be interested in joining me, contact me via email. travelinhobo@yahoo

It all depends. What kind of traveler are you hobo? Are you the type that takes all the latest and expensive equipment or are you one of these cheap charlies that cycle around on a $350 bike?
These things matter you know.;-)

My Dearest Sid-
For your information, that bike didn't come tax free. It was $350 plus tax! But if you count the grip shifters I made Giant replace (STIs by their choice) due to their lack of touring knowledge when creating the bike, I'm sure the bike is worth more. But what really matters is that it has 2 wheels and goes! :)
All my love Sid...

"Cheap Charlies"? A quick word on staying alive in the Third World. If you're going thru an area as hazardous as Africa, you really, really DON'T want to be riding a cool machine which marks you out as a source of easy money for anyone with a machette(the non-projectile weapon of choice in Africa) and a bad attitude. Stay low, ride a bike that looks like a piece of garbage, no matter what it actually is and wear cheapo clothes. Being flash in some countries gets you killed....messily. Have you ever seen what a machette can do to a man? Right now I wouldn't visit Zimbabwe in a Hummer if you paid me.
