My wife and I will be at the Houston one (Memorial Park, 7 pm). It's pretty funny that the first thing my wife asked when I brought up the topic of the Ride of Silence was - "How much does it cost?" I guess she's become jaded at all of the registration fees, minimum fundraising requirements, et al that most of the big rides require.
It's rare that you find an event like the Ride of Silence that is pure in its purpose and asks nothing else but your time and support.

I read a short newspaper article in the Dallas Morning News about the ride, I had no idea it was that close to being canceled, I was impressed with the turnout at White Rock Lake.
I just hope the reason for the ride is not lost in all the mechanics of making it happen.

It's rare that you find an event like the Ride of Silence that is pure in its purpose and asks nothing else but your time and support.That sounds good, but ... not really.
There's lots of rides out there that don't cost anything but your time and possibly support. As for being `pure in purpose', well, that's the debatable part. Critical Mass, for example, has a pretty pure purpose -- to say that bikes belong. (Though not everybody rides CM for the same reason, and many think it does more damage than good, of course.) Other rides have no purpose beyond simply have a good time. Not trying to discount the Ride of Silence in any way, but it's not the only ride out there that doesn't want money and has a purpose.
In any event, if you're used to signing up and paying money to go on bike rides, step back and see what else is out there, look at the more social rides. At least in Austin, there's a lot of them, and they're ridden by fun and interesting people. Some have a greater purpose, some are just for fun (which is a great purpose by itself, if you ask me.)
Most don't include jerseys for the $0 entrance fee, but the last one I went to somebody did have a stencil made up and some spray paint that they could paint up your shirt for you if you so desired :)
