has anyone tried to do this? i want to get an old fashioned pursuit bike but want to use an mtb clincher wheel in front instead of the tubular it comes with when im riding on the road. can i put 650 tire on the 26in rim?

I bet the rim will be too wide.

No. A 650c tire will require a 650c rim. A 26" (559mm) rim is smaller than a 650c (571mm) rim.

Why don't you just put a 26" tire on the 26" rim. They make 26" slicks, you know.
Why not just use the tubular? Too many people perpetuate the myth that they are unsuitable for daily use. This isn't true. Use it and enjoy it. 3 of 7 of my bikes have tubulars for daily use and I have had no issues in the 25+ years that I have used them. You just need to learn a bit about how to deal with them first.
