The Memorial Day social ride will start at the Silver Creek Metro Park at 1pm (tentatively) on Monday, May 25, 2009 and will be a 30-50 mile rolling ride through parts of Summit, Wayne and Stark counties. Maps of the route and the meeting spot to follow, but wanted to get the day, time and meeting point out there now, so people can plan.
Please respond in this thread if you plan on joining us.

Where in the park would we be meeting?
Here is a map: On page 2 (http://www.summitmetroparks.org/App_Themes/MetroParks/images/fall/parks/trail_maps/sc.pdf)
Also, what is the proposed route?

As per the directions I wrote, it is the first road/parking area on your right when you enter the park from Hametown (Pheasant Run).
The route is still being finalized to ensure it's fairly easy and in the 30ish mile range. I'm thinking we'll either ride to Marshallville, then over to Canal Fulton for some ice cream, then back, or down to Dalton for a snack at one of the gas stops and back, or some combo thereof. Traffic levels on these roads is usually med-light to scarce.

Kristen, you should come. it's only 100 miles. you could ride it and have a century on us before you get there! :D
Gary, I assume this means youre in? I certainly hope so.
Has anyone talked to the guys that were on the first trip? I think they might be down.
Do we have a route finalized yet?

I am trying.....I would love to meet all of you as well. Memorial day is tuff because I feel like a heel for leaving the family. In fact Saturdays JJJ ride which I have had penciled in for sometime now is running into issues. The wife SAYS she does not mind me going but again...I feel like a heel for chucking the wife and kids on a holiday weekend for a bike ride.......

I'm off tomorrow, so I'll probably take a ride to finalize the route. I'm gonna make it easy...30-40 miles, mostly rollers, perhaps a 14-15mph average speed, no drop. Since we have to start so late and Tuesday is back to work, I doubt we'll have time to do a pot luck afterward. I've got a couple possible ice cream stops in the area tho...I'll check tomorrow to see which will be open on Memorial day (most likely the one in Canal Fulton)
So what do we have...a couple of for sures and a couple of maybes?

Well.. I ain't riding over :roflmao2:
wussy you will see when the road starts to climb.
Only thing I ever climbed was the overpass.

Most of the rollers are no steeper than the overpass, though some may be a little longer. The steep ones are mercifully short.

I drew out the route on Bikely for those who are interested.
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Memorial-Day-2009-ride
Don't let the elevation profile scare you...what looks like a big climb near the end is less than 200ft of elevation gain over two miles...piece of cake for even a fat old dude like me.
I chose what is probably the flattest route I could and we'll keep an easy pace. This isn't a race, it's a no-drop social ride. If you wanna hammer OTF or slug OTB, kewl, we can all regroup at selected points over the route.
FYI, this is my turf...helmets are optional. ;) Clothing is optional for the ladies only.

Maybe I can sneak out...

I rode the route with Cheri today. She has maybe 200 miles on the bike since January, so I figured she would be a good measuring stick for how hard the route was. She had no problems with it whatsoever, finishing with an average speed of 14.7mph in just over 2 hours, including an ice cream stop.
The ice cream shop in Canal Fulton will be open on Monday (they also have burgers, dogs and such), but note that they only take cash, no credit/debit cards or checks. I think the Century House restaurant will be open too...we might be able to score outdoor tables on the deck.
There is a little park in Marshallville that we can stop at for a bathroom break at about 11 miles, there is also a small restaurant and store, but not sure if they will be open Monday or not.
Finally, I am going out tomorrow to mark the route with some colored chalk and maybe sweep some gravel. I have the route posted on Bikely http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Memorial-Day-2009-ride

Bring the wife!
Would if I could. But she's 3 weeks post-partum.. no biking for another 3 or so weeks, just in time to try out her new road bike.
She thinks 8 miles on the towpath is ambitious, but we'll change that.

I have a preliminary okay from the wife, since I haven't done much riding in the past few weeks I may wuss out and drive in.

I like that route. Though, some of the left-right directions are backwards. I only counted 2 places: pt. 34 should be a right and pt. 188 should be a right. Let me know if I'm mistaken. I don't think it'll be much of an issue but i think it's also that way on the cue sheet.
Dan, you are awesome. You've picked a great route and are really going the extra mile to organize the ride. You are to be commended sir!

05-24-09, 09:46 AM
Here's a quickie cue sheet. I am also going out to mark the route and of course we'll be regrouping from time-to-time since this is a no-drop ride. Cheri will probably hang back near the tail end and I know some of my buds like Derrick know the route and area, so no worries, nobody is gonna get lost. ;)

Sadly, I'm probably out. I think I've caught a bug thats going around and 2-3 hours on a bike seat might not be the best thing.
I'll post again if anything changes.
On top of that, gas hit $2.59 here and I'm unemployed at the moment.

No worries, 80 miles is a long way for a 30 mile ride. Hopefully we'll see you for the Hancock Hundred in September. ;)

I'm excited for this. I did some cleaning and a bit of maintainance/adjustment last night. I might be 10-15 minutes late but don't wait up for me. I've got the cue sheet and a catch-up sprint would be good exercise.
