I have an old schwinn le tour I don't know what year. when did the rear dropouts switch from matching dropouts to the right dropout having a place to bolt the deraileur to? They used some kind of adapter on the old kind.

Well, it's been awhile. You can still get a brand new Shimano Tourney derailleur that will bolt right up to your frame or you gen get a separate bolt-on derailleur hanger and use most any derailleur that will go with the rest of the bike.

It wasn't so much a moment in time as that it used to be that only the highest quality bikes had the integrated dérailleur hanger, now it's there on almost all bikes.
Any bike shop which has been around for years will have the old hangers stuck in a drawer somewhere.

Sounds like the question is more a historical one. That is, in some year, Schwinn improved the frame on its Le Tour with a derailleur hanger; what year? Capsicum, you might want to post this in the Classic & Vintage forum; you might find a Schwinn history buff there.

yea I might do that.
I'm mostly just getting bits and pieces of mechanical info on the old bike rounded up so I know what I'm dealing with, as I'm familier with new mtb stuff but not older road stuff.

It has the original bolt on hanger on it. Do deraileurs all use the same size bolt/thread- past, present, low end, high end. I'd like to upgrade with NOS deraileurs so that I can use indexed shifters, even if they are the single lever downtube type.
