I was referred to this subforum by "Bicycle Mechanics."

I am looking to sell my 2004 Trek 5000 but have no idea of the worth. Most everything is stock, but I will give the details here:

Frame: Trek 5000 Carbon Fiber
Wheelset: Bontrager Race
Stem: Bontrager Race
Handlebars: Bontrager Race
Seatpost: Bontrager Carbon Fiber
Crankset, Brifters: Ultegra 6500 (9spd)
RD: Ultegra 6600
FD,Brakeset: Shimano 105
Cassette: Shimano 12-25

Everything listed has roughly 10K miles on it, except the wheelset/cassette/RD which have about 4K miles.

I've had the bike overhauled every year I have owned it and so it is in excellent working order. There have been two mishaps on the bike:

1. While biking across a wet wooden bridge on a greenway, I skidded out and went over. I ended up scratching the side of the left brifter.

2. Experienced chain drop and the chain hit the [right] chainstay and tore off the chainstay protector and some of the clearcoat it was affixed to. I coated it in high-strength epoxy and have it wrapped in black electrical tape now. [I was unable to get a picture up close enough to show this.]

I posted the pictures on my personal website for perusal. It is a little dirty right now. I would wash it before I sold it! :D

If you need more photos, just let me know.

Thank-You for your help.

Jon,

I don't know why someone would consider a 5 year old bike reasonable for Classic & Vintage...

Someone here may have an idea of the value, but it will be another 15 years or so before your bike is old enough to fit the category (depending on who you ask, as we are not a homogeneous group). Some people define C&V as anything before integrated shifters, and others pick an arbitrary age... 5 years is a little shorter than any age I recall anyone mentioning.

However, as a general rule, a good way to determine approximate values for used bikes is to search Ebay for completed auctions (I believe you have to be a registered member for that function) and this will get you in the ballpark.

Also, your location is a factor in the value of a used bike. I don't know Knoxville, but if there is an active cycling community, it will help you, if not, you will not get as much.

Also, frame size can be an influence on valuee, either positive or negative.

Also, especially if you use Ebay, you can possibly get more by selling the components and frame independently.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

Just a quick & dirty figure for many areas. Check BikePedia for original MSRP and 1/2 it. Of course your individual bike could be worth more or less, but this is a reasonable starting point.

Saw a similar bike, but all Dura Ace, at a bike shop in western NC. $599. It was really clean, I thought it was a sweet deal. It took them a while to sell it. I really do not follow newer bike values however.
