As some of you may know from my previous posts I have been having problems with breathing and coughing fits after I get done riding. Last night after work I took a quick 15 minute ride. After I was done I spent the next 3 hours coughing to the point of vomiting. I have a doctors appointment next Wednesday and hopefully he will be able to point me in the right direction to get this stopped. Meanwhile the after effects of riding are over riding the joy that I get from the ride. And frankly it scares me a little not to be able to grab a decent breath. Hell, I'm still coughing. It isn't NEARLY as bad, but it still keeps me coughing for at least 48 hours afterwords. So I'm taking time off, until I can figure out what is causing me such problems. I'll keep you informed.

Jerry

If that's the case then I've had it for 6 weeks and I haven't died yet! I have no fever, and I feel great if i stay away from exertion, but I will get a answer from my Dr. Besides between my work schedule and my Dr's availability Next week is the soonest I could make it.

Lots of things it could be. Pneumonia would be the worst, I think.

I have allergy induced asthma which manifests as a cough rather than a constriction. Before I ride (or walk the dog, or go hiking, or leave for work, etc.) I make sure I have my small bottle of eucalyptus oil with me. A little dab under my schnozz and I don't cough for hours. Maybe you've got allergies?

You wrote the above.

Pneumonia comes on slowly.

Jerry,

Read about the symptoms of pneumonia (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pneumonia/DS00135/DSECTION=symptoms). As they state there, it doesn't always come with a high fever. So if you have a weakened immune system, the symptoms are not obvious:

From the mayoclinic.com website:

Ironically, people in high-risk groups such as older adults and people with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems may have fewer or milder symptoms than less vulnerable people do. And instead of having the high fever that often characterizes pneumonia, older adults may even have a lower than normal temperature.Good luck and let us know what the doctor said.

I'm not a Doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night! I recommend:

Tea with Lemon, Honey, and a measure of Brandy. -- Hey it couldn't hurt!

Seriously:

And frankly it scares me a little not to be able to grab a decent breath. Hell, I'm still coughing.

Perhaps you should call your physician and see if you can get in a bit sooner?

I'd be concerned about these in the following order

Pneumonia (If a fever is present)
Severe Asthma
COPD
Congestive Heart Failure

I had something like this and went to the doctor IMMEDIATELY!! I was diagnosed with asthmatic bronchitis. I got an inhaler from the doctor which I carry in an emergency. I took a few weeks off of the bike to get better and now i'm fine. It may not be much but go to the doctor sooner than later! Good luck!!!

And I was tentatively diagnosed with Bronchitis. But just to make sure that nothing else is wrong I have an appointment to get some chest X-Rays and a lung function test. I was given an inhaler and some antibiotics so hopefully I will be able to ride again soon. I'll keep every one posted.

Hi Jerry -

I too have been off the bike (for a week and a half now) with respiratory problems. Had to go to the ER for a breathing treatment last week, and still am not better. Ran through a course of oral prednisone, so Doc prescribed an inhaled steroid, and Singulair. Hopefully I'll be better by this weekend.

Hope you feel better and get back to riding soon...

I spent 8 weeks on the couch last July/Aug with a bronchial infection that ended in pneumonia in my left left lung.

I have never quite been able to draw what I think should be full breathe since. kinda scary. Also, since last summers illness, I have developed a weird reaction to the exertion of biking. When I go out to ride, as normal I struggle for the first 3-4 miles (15-20 minutes), then the juice kicks in and it seems the lungs clear and the heart feels great and I just ride. 15-20-30 miles. Hills feel great. All good right? Nope! Within 15 minutes of shutting down after a ride, I start coughing and can't get a full breathe again.

Take care of your lungs. It is a big deal.

Good luck
Jay
