Commuting - First Commute to Work

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Well,
I finally did it. I gave myself plenty of time and made it to work with 20 minutes to spare. I've only got a 6.5 mile ride, so it wasn't to bad. I really need to get my stamina up though. My wife and I have only had our Ketts for about a few months now and it has been raining here pretty constantly so we really haven't had a chance to get out much. I'm not sure how often I will be able to do this since I work in a school district and need to travel between schools sometimes. But it was a nice start to the day. I have a few tricky lights on my route, but for the most part it went pretty smooth. We'll see how the trip home goes.

Congrats Tim!
I started commuting last month and its GREAT. I have a 6 mile ride to work and enjoy it very much, even when its hot and the wind is against me, it still beats driving.
Keep it up!

Well done! Keep it up and you'll have the stamina for much longer rides before you know it. :D

I have a 1 mile commute. So, I can either take the bus, pay $1.75, sit on my ass and get to work 20 minutes later, or I can bike for free, get some excercise and arrive at work in 5 minutes.

Congratulations. It gets easier and easier, and it's worth doing for many reasons.
Since you work for a school district, maybe you can help kids get to school on their bikes rather than being transported in SUVs. Childhood obesity is becoming a national tragedy.

Hey, way to go! Be careful, it can be addicting, I've been at it for over 23 years now, it's in my blood. Keep it up, you'll be glad you did.

Once you get used to riding, you won't let a bit of rain stop you. With the right kit, it no big deal. Some of us even enjoy riding in the rain.

Welcome, opel70!
I've only done it on and off now for a few weeks. I'm not an every-dayer like some on this board, but I definitely enjoy it.
I didn't have my panniers yesterday and traffic was really backed up. What was normally a 20 minute drive turned into 30 minutes. (Only ten minutes, but percentage-wise that's huge! :-p ) It's an 8.5 mile drive. As I was sitting in traffic I thought that my bike ride to work only takes me 35-40 minutes. And the time is better spent.

It creeps up on you, this commuting thing. I started just a couple of times a week on my 10 mile commute. Then it turned to four times/week with a day of rest. Then it was only on sunny days. Then it was only on days when it didn't snow. Then... well, you get the picture. All of a sudden, one day I woke up and realized that hey I was just like those crazies who ride in any weather. I'm one of THEM now! And it sure beats the bus...
