Apologies if this has been discussed before, but can anyone shed light on this rear derailleur? I've never seen the like. I have no personal interest (bike is a Chiorda up for sale on CL), purely philosophical.

Its a simplex. The metal thing is a gaurd to protect the simplex in case of a crash

Oh, that makes a lot more sense than anything else I was conjuring in my head. Easily solved. Those simplex derailleurs are pretty fragile. Dropped a pulley once and had to get a new derailleur!

Theres a shop in PHilly that gets $70 for those fragile simplex derailers.
