Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - The "Average Clyde" thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am not an ultra-clyde.
I am not an old clyde.
I am not an athena.
I am not a tall Clyde (6' 1 - 6' 2")
I am not a fast clyde.
So I started a thread for those of us NOT in the other groups that have their own threads now :D

LOL. Yeah, but if we wind up being geographically restrictive, there will be WAY too many threads like this one!

Now that I think of it. I am over 300 lbs, does that make me an ultra clyde?

at 6'2" I don't think I'm considered tall, at least not in this group.
I had a weird sensation this morning...biked out with the sun at my back. turned around, into the sun and put on sunglasses....suddenly felt like I was 3 feet higher off the ground. It occured to me "This is what someone riding a 70 cm frame must feel like". so for a few minutes I was a "tall" clyde.

6', 270#, 41 years old. I'll check in too. I think I might qualify for the charming clyde thread with jboyd and beanz as well. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Guess this is my category too. Although I'm on the left coast :twitchy:

I'm not sure. What's the difference between an Ultra-Clyde and an Uber-Clyde?

Sorry, but, no. I'm just squeeking into the "tall" thread at 6'5". Who would have thought you would need to be that tall to qualify for 2%?

What is fast? Is a 16mph avg over a false flat 20 miles (work to beach (close enough, the female outfits got skimpier and skimpier, which in SoCal is a sign of how close to the beach you are....not that I noticed....much) to home)?
What if you can drop a poser and pull away at 40 kph because well, you can and he pi$$ed you off after passing you and then slowing down to his pace which is annoyingly slower than your own? Oh, don't get me started on the fact he rode down the middle of the MUP.....what a putz....
5ft 8ish (scoliosis.....so the inches varies....) and 270ish and 28 - do I qualify?
I also move to allow Athenas (any Athenas) in the avg Clyde thread.... :D They have a calming effect on me :innocent:

I know a couple good trails.
Hard Road & 315 --> Downtown and back. ~20 miles
Johnstown --> Newark and back. ~30 miles
I used to ride them both pretty often, but I'll need to get back into bike riding shape before I attempt either of them this year. Give me a month or so. ;)

Yep, that's the one. :)
The Johnstown trail is a little more scenic, but it's a bit out of the way for some folks. Fortunately for me, I live about the same distance from both (Westerville).

I thought Uber-Clyde is a description of male riders over 300 pounds.

Wow, another one. Now I can start a scoli-clyde thread! :) I just hope no one gets bent out of shape about it.

6'1"; 215# w/ broken leg, currently biking vicariously through you guys because I will be off the bike until August. No, I don't think we need a "broken leg" thread.
AS to riding: I am looking at the idea of getting myself a trike because the only order I have is not to ride a two wheeler for 12 weeks. I can ride the trike as soon as my weight restriction is lifted. That will be in the first week of June.

My biggest challenge right now is not becoming an Uber-Clyde. Without being able to perform any substantial exercise, it would be really easy for me to balloon out to 300 lbs.
Not eating or, at least, not eating crap is the only way I can keep the weight off right now. I have spent the last month eating nothing but fruits and veggies, a little rice, a few patatoes and various nut-based goodies my babay whipps up in the food processor. Nonetheless, even with tremendous discipline, keeping the weight off while gimped is a biatch.

Finally a thread I can join. I definitely fall into the "average". I think. 6-1 220 down from 255 and 42 years old. Used to be able to hit 17-18 mph average. Hurt my knee and now I'm lucky to push 12-13 mph average on my good days of spinning.

I am as average as they get, I stepped on the official gym scale today at 204 pounds, down from 220 last year. All this packed on to 5'9" frame. I have kicked my average to 17+mph for most rides, but certainly not too speedy.

Yeah, I did my speed riding when I was 17, now some 30 years later, I don't have to prove anything to anyone, by going fast. Today riding with my better half we averaged a whopping 13km/h, but she is just getting back into riding, on my own I am faster, but still, I like to stop, take pictures, smell the flowering trees, watch the wildlife. If I just want to go fast, get somewhere as quickly as possible, that's what cages are for.

Baron, I forgot what all you tweaked, but if no arm/shoulder injuries can't you use crutches?
I broke my ankle and leg (5 separate places!) dunking off a picnic table when I was in college (yeah, young and stupid, nothing like a crash landing!) and had a cast for almost 4 months. Wore out 2 sets of nubs on my crutches. Fantastic exercise - I went from 225# or so to 190# despite my very healthy appetite. Had great shoulder strength.
Alas, the cast came off but the screws stayed in, and all I was allowed to do was walk (no running) until the surgeon took one of them out 3 more months later. The healthy appetite continued minus the exercise, and I gained 75#. I'm still kicking myself for not riding the bicycle or swimming (still had the varsity then IIRC although by this time it was missing several parts).

Yep, I am definitely up on the crutches. I can feel my arms building up more strength everyday and my chest and abs are morphing into something that would make Arnold proud right before my eyes. But, I need to watch my food intake more now than ever before. THe calorie burn of a 1/2 mile crutch hobble is nowhere near that of riding a century -- and, I used to gain weight after one of those.
Good news though is that I am down to 210. I started the injury cycle at a solid 220, so the 10 lbs drop makes me a bit happier.

I'm 6' 206 lbs down from 220 when I started reading this thread. With luck, I'll soon be an ex-Clyde and maybe we should have our own thread. At any rate, I like this one. Do I have to quit the moment I hit 199?
