I have Ultegra components and just upgraded (some would say) from an old steel frame to an aluminum one. The front derailleur seems to not fit the tube. Am I doing something wrong?

You just need a different size derailer-aluminum tubes are generally fetter than steel.

I'll take your ill-fitting Ultegra FD off your hands. I usually prefer skinny steel tubes anyway :)

Before buying a new front-derailleur, there are two things to always check. You just found one of them. The other is what direction of pull you need - top-pull? Or bottom-pull? Some FD's are marked as both. So always check what you need and what is available to suit that need.

Just in case it's not implied or obvious - a "braze-on" type won't do you any good.
