Bicycle Mechanics - Another "what's that noise" thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

About 300-400 miles ago I installed a new Shimano 105 (FC-5603?) 10spd triple crankset on my LeMond. I noticed in the last couple days there's a faint intermittent "click". It's definitely related to crank rotation, when coasting there's no noise. I've experienced my share of square taper BB issues over the years and this neither sounded like that, nor clearly occurred at a specific crank orientation.

This weekend I might remove the crank and give the BB cups an extra tightening - but this does not sound like the notorious pop/click heard when the drive side arm is at high noon. I have worn out external BB bearings on a different crank, and this is not that distinct of a noise.

I've read sheldon's cheat sheet for narrowing noises and this is too subtle for me to nail down.
Ideas?

Thanks
-Sean

I've had pedals make clicking kinds of noises that sound like a BB going bad. Only while pedaling of course whcih makes it hard to tell where the noise is coming from. I don't know what kind you have but you might take them apart and lube where you can. Also check your cleats...

+1 as a possibility. Change shoes or wear flat soles to check this out. Maybe put some other pedals on to help narrow down the cause.

My usual post, here ... even if it just helps somebody else searching for the same notion....

You many find the following links helpful in tracking it down:

It's usually just a matter of patiently removing, cleaning,
re-lubing, and re-torquing fasteners until it quiets down.
