Mountain Biking - Getting a new bike.

Hey everyone, I've outgrown my old bike and need a new one. Seeing as I'm only 15, my spending limit is about $800. I've been doing alot of research and have narrowed it down to two bike.

Trek 6000 (Black/Onyx)

I found the Trek at a LBS for $699 (180 off MSRP), and the Rockhopper for $725.

Forks are the same, brakes on Trek are better, I think the Trek has all around slightly better components but I've test ridden both and they seem pretty even. I won't be racing or anything but I will be riding pretty hard on singletracks (I'm 6' 200 lbs.) and getting 3-4 feet of air on occasion. I'm pretty decided on the Trek, but I was wondering what you guys thought.

oh, i see you're new here. the general rule of the mtb section on BF is that you have to post pictures of the bike after you get it... so you better charge up dem batteries.

I got the trek 6000 last year and pretty with it. Overall it has treated me well. I just had a problem with the rear wheel (the spokes keep breaking despite all my and my LBS best efforts) but my LBS is taking care of that. Other than that great ride :)

Thanks zvh, good to know. I ended up going with the Trek. Good price, good components, great brand. Also, I picked up the 21.5" frame, due to recommendation of the guy at the LBS, he said he rode a 19.5" for years and after riding a 21.5" realized it was too small. I'm 6' 200 lbs at 15 years old. I'm only going to grow about 2 more inches at the most. Do you think this frame size will work okay?

I'm 6'1'' 220 lbs. was going to get my 6700 in 19.5 but my LBS told me to get the 21.5. i have short legs and long torso. i trusted him and ordered the larger size. best decision i ever made. I now realize my old bike was way to small. i guess it really depends on your body and what feels right. sounds like that size will work for you.

$699? Where is your LBS located?

Alright, thanks coyot. LBS is in dowtown Portland, OR, and they just raised the price to $799, which is still a good deal. They said that the MSRP was a bit to high to sell at.

that's a good buy...pretty much all of the lbs's in my area sell at or very very close to msrp on everything unless it is a manufacturer sponsored promo.

My parents bought my Trek 6000 when I was 13. Now I'm 22 and it's still a great bike.
