Some people tie 'em up and put 'em in the dryer -- low heat -- for a few minutes.

Hair dryer/heat gun could work.

Search the forum, though. LOTS of tips/tricks for tough tire mounts.

What are you using to pry the tire on? If it's a screwdriver, stop! A screwdriver will puncture your tube every time. Use tire levers and a lot of patience. The Park Tools site has a good tutorial on removing and reinstalling a tire: http://parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=100

Also: are you sure you have the right replacement tire? Bike tire sizes can be bizarre to the inexperienced. 700C and 27" tires are almost identical in size, but trying to mount a 700C tire on a 27" rim will be almost impossible and can cause repeated punctures if attempted.
