So I went to ride my usual loop tonight. The weather is perfect enough not to wear anything but short sleeves. No sooner than a block away I get attacked by friggen skeetos!!! And it's not like they swarm me and do their thing and leave. NOoooOOOooo. They follow me and my bike for quite a while. Landing, gripping, biting, and sucking my very life blood from me to fill their evil little tummies. I mean, DANG!! I feel like one of those dead bodies out there where all the hungry vultures (well in this case blasted little pesky things) come down and swoop on me. Or a bleeding fish that attracts the sharks and causes a swirling bloody mass of confusion. I mean, WTH?? I am not out there just to become a freakin' food fest ya know. I'm not put on this Earth to cause a feeding frenzy. Just leave me alone. LEAVE ME THE HECK ALONE!! I'm allergic to bug bites and now I'm gonna have to show up to work looking like a huge mass of red welts that itch like crazy.

I swear. What is the purpose of a mosquito anyway? Why were they invented? I mean, they are just like fleas, NO PURPOSE!!!

well, they're food to some birds.

but I think you just have to pedal faster and drope them.

either that, or you have some really sweat scent to them. were you working around dry ice or do you just have amazing CO2 production?

Yupper, I hate those *******s too. One bit my on my tant the other night. Since you are asking Siu, I drank way too much and decided to streak up and down my parent's street the other night and one of those nasty mosquitos missed my John Thursday and hit my tant. It totally sucked so I set my mom's house on fire. I don't always think wisely Siu. Just Say'in.

the odd part is, I've ran into swarms of those pesky things when on trails near rivers and ponds, but I've yet to be bitten.

phew, no one wants my blood, not the red cross and not the mosquitoes either :D

I have a friend who swears by taking large doses of B vitamins to ward them off. I think it's just a matter of people having different body chemistry. Sounds like they find you obsessively attractive.

Those huge swarms of mosquitoes you see tend to be composed of male mosquitoes which are trying to attract those bloodsucking females.

Male mosquitoes make noise but do not bite... the female are virtually silent.

I have been out in the bush and have almost had the sky blacked out by clouds of noisy mosquitoes and have suffered very few bites.

It is when things are quiet and you can't see the mosquitoes that you need to have bathed in DEET as that is when the female mosquitoes seem to be the most active.

Anyone participating in physical activity is going to look tasty to a hungry skeeter as they are attracted to carbon dioxide and octenol which is a chemical we release when we breathe and sweat.

I avoid bananas in the summer as I have noted they seem to be what turns me into a skeeter magnet and I eat a lot of garlic so my issues with skeeters and vampires have been much reduced. I also use repellent when I am in areas where there are more mosquitoes.

Now...if I could only do something about those zombies.

Okay - skeeters were said to be food for birds. What's the purpose of fleas other than to annoy their host?

My scorpions had a mite infestation so I bought some little mite hunters from a bio lab, they gobbled up all the mites, I'm sure there are some parasite hunters that eats up fleas, just don't know which, so I guess they do serve a purpose.

centipedes eat fleas, bed bugs and a bunch of other small insects that would otherwise eat us :twitchy:

Bats actually eat very few mosquitoes... perhaps it is a matter of them being too small to be picked up on their radar.

Dragonflies on the other hand... they are voracious.

There are a few species of mosquitoes that only feed on other mosquitoes.

And as far as mosquitoes go... there is no place in the world like Manitoba when it comes to skeeters.

You have to pout rocks in your kids pockets to keep them from being carried off.

For some reason mozzies just love some people and don't care too much for others. I, like you, have perfect mozzie blood so they love me. I get eaten alive by the little buggers. My BF, on the other hand, gets left alone when I get swarmed. I nearly had a panic attack when we were camping last year on a portage in a swampy area at dusk. It wasn't pretty. I get big welts too, and you can't even see where they've been when they actually bother sucking his blood (I assume they ran out of good spots on me).

I'd be quite happy if mosquitoes were wiped off the face of the earth.

I have some redeeming qualities though... I am immune to poison ivy... woohoo!

Depends on the bat. Some species (i.e., Little Brown) can eat up to 600 skeeters an hour.

We have these things. I think the colloquial name is Moose fly. They are green and large and fast. I think they have teeth.

They rip hunks of flesh off and fly off fast. Deet doesn't stop them. I once put on most of a bottle of pure deet. I think in the end the sheer oiliness is what stopped them.

They make clothes now with repellant built right in. Sui might want to try them.

You don't have to worry about the skeeters here. They only weigh about a pound. What you want to worry about is the deer flies and moose flies.

But I'm lucky. For some reason biting insects don't like me very much.

They are attracted to sweat and repel to smoke and banana < I'm not sure about bananas since I've gotten bit by one after eating one. But maybe carry those smoking mosquito candle repeller things on your bike.
