Folding Bikes - Is this feasible (trading in Dahon for another bike)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just had an idea and want to know if it was feasible before I approach a bike store and make a fool of myself.
As some may know, I have a brand new replacement, boxed & unridden 2009 Dahon MU SL that I do not need. There is a large bike store that sells both Dahon and Pashley bikes.... just wondering if I could trade the Dahon in against a TSR30? I’m sure their (Dahon) bikes are coming from the same importer.... or is it far more complicated than that?
Is it still common practise to trade bikes in or not?

You could ask them, but i would guess it might be complicated paperwork wise for them, so maybe expect a significant loss in price. You could always stick it on ebay and see what happens, you might get a better return.

Send the MU to me; I'll... evaluate it for a while, and let you know what it's worth. In a year or three. :innocent:
Good Grief, sell it first. Least you'll get a better price. Trade is the last resort and plan on loosing $$$$$$

not necessarly a bad idea ... depends on the shop of course and what he has in stock and such .. of course same with cars ... you trade in the bike for wholesale and buy the other one resale ... ..
have a little patient and sell it outright .. you are makin money that way
if the bike shop has a section of bikes that are 'repaired used' you should be able to.
Doesn't hurt to ask them....if you don't like their offer you are under no obligation to take it.

I am not familiar with the consumer laws in the UK. But if it is like it is here, you are probably out of luck as for trading it, even boxed and unridden. Once the bike is sold, the ownership along with all legal claims and warranties are the first privately owned buyer's only and are not transferable. That means it is classified as a used bike by Dahon and is not covered by them for anyone else that bought it afterwards. I am not trying to discourage you in selling the bike. Just keep in mind that a knowledgeable person-i.e. the bike shop in question is included here-will know this and will most likely pay far less (at a used bike price) than you did for the same bike, not matter what state it is currently.
You are probably better off on Ebay like others here suggested. Either way, I would look on the Dahon UK Website to see about used bike's legal status over there before proceeding. Then ask the bike shop about a trade if you still wish to.
Thanks for all the advice guys. I have already resigned myself to a big loss... I would probably let it go for as low as £500 if it doesn't sell soon, any less and it might as well sit in its box until such times as I need a spare bike or a friend or relative needs a folder.

If you walked into my LBS [a Dahon dealer] with a brand new Dahon in a box and could show proof of purchase I'm sure they work a reasonable deal out for you. If you accepted a store credit you'd get more.
I'm also quite sure that they could sell that bike and the new owner would have no issue with warranty support with their receipt from the LBS.
The transaction would not technically meet the criteria of Dahon's warranty, but 1st off Dahon isn't on the look out for this most unlikely of situations occurring and frankly they wouldn't care if the LBS was a good dealer selling lots of their product.

PDR, you could try the A to B small ads. I am putting my HH7 and Merc as possible trade in fodder for a speed TR or NWT there next issue I hope.

ebay it. Its still packed, so that would save you some more expenses if you have someone pack it for you.

Craigslist the bike and see what the response is.

PDR, I'm looking for a fast folder for my commute. If you still have it, and want to sell it, feel free to send me a PM.
