Triathlon - Reason for inconsistent training results? Nutrition? Mental? Or health?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've been training for a 70.3 (world qualifier) almost every day since March and I still have about 3 more months of training until the race. I kick ass most days. Running 10 miles at 7.5 minute pace or biking 50 at average speed of 20 mph is pretty easy and I feel great afterwards. I feel like I could rest for 20 minutes and go all over again!

However, three times in the past few months I felt like crap. Once on a bike where I struggled just to keep up 18 mph and I called it quits after just 20 miles. And twice during run training where I couldn't run more than about 3 miles. That just happened last night. Granted I was running with two 6 lbs weights in my hands but I've done that before.

Is it nutrition? I ate nothing different yesterday...

Or is it in my head?

Or could it be a mild illness (viral or allergy)?

What if this happens on race day?! I'd be screwed, wouldn't I?

I'd say general fatigue is all. Without knowing the specifics of your training routine I'd just recommend planning a down day or two in your week for recovery. Even if you feel fine, your body needs time to rebuild and refuel. Overtraining is the most common mistake made by triathletes. I think you'll be fine on race day if you taper properly.

Oh boy....

I appear to have gluten intolerance. Gluten causes malabsorption of nutrients which can obviously impact my performance.

I don't know if it is celiac yet. I need to have tests run. But I doubt it is celiac. I acquired GI issues last year after a dentist prescribed antibiotics. Celiac is genetic.

I've been on a gluten free diet for the past three days and the difference in how I feel is HUGE.
