Raleigh bought out Triumph motorcycle company back in 54. Question is which Triumph do you have??
The 54-57 Triumph was a typical British towner commuter bike with a internal 3 speed rear hub that was more of a utility bicycle that most Brits relied on to get around. If your lucky you might still be able to see the date stamp on the rear hub. Some Triumphs just had Triumph without the Raleigh, but those would be followed by another name like Sportster, Frenzy

Here's a site with a lot more info: http://sheldonbrown.com/raleigh.html
And here's another with more frame number info (if you can still read it): http://www.oldroads.com/ra_sn.asp

Then in 72 the Triumph name came back but the bike was made in Holland not England; see: http://fredhaj.tripod.com/72triumphpage.html

These bikes were actually pretty neat bikes and extremily reliable...unusual for something made in Britain during those years!
