I know its a bit out of the norm bit I am considering commuting on my bmx bike once I get settled at my next base (I'm in the AF). It doesnt seem like an altogether bad idea, it certainly wouldnt be as quick as it would be if I put some coin into a cross bike or a road bike....or maybe even rode my mountain bike...but I figure it would be fun since I ride street alot anyways..... Anyone's thoughts on this?? Am I insane? :D

I don't think you're crazy.
I believe the explosion of single-speed biking is in part an attempt to recapture the feeling of zipping around on BMX bikes.
I'll tell you what, if I could find a reasonably priced, quality, BMX bike that fit me (6'1" 225 pounds) I would buy it in a second.
And I wouldn't think twice about commuting on it as my needs are very small as far as storage capacity.
I can fit all my commuting stuff into a backpack if I need to. I would ask around on the BMX board to see what they think.
Maybe the moderators will have to start a "Commute BMX Style" board.
Lastly, just because someone else thinks it's dumb, doesn't make it dumb.
I've come to realise that it dosen't matter what you ride, or even where you bought it, as long as you're having fun.
(maybe that should be my signature)

actually I got out of bmx for several years and just picked up a nice bike (Haro Backtrail X1 DLX) for $200 cash (military discount on an already on sale bike gets you really far these days)...its not overly popular with today's elitist bmx scene but it fits me and my needs just fine

BMX is do-able over a couple of miles. The riding position is not so efficient for longer rides. Still, it will keep you mobile as you cruise the thrift stores/salvation army/skips for quality road/touring bikes.

I agree....I foudn in my younger years that 15 miles was about the tops I was willing to ride to get to 'the spot' on my bmx bike
