Northeast - anyone in NYC know somebody who *needs* a bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

for free, not to buy.
for transportation / work / etc.
i just bought a new bike, and i have my stock 19''(i believe) '99 Specialized Rockhopper. it needs a tuneup, and it's picked up a few dents but it's overall in good shape.

i was looking into charity but most things i find are for kids - it's an adult-sized bike, and i would like to give it to someone who actually needs it.

i was thinking of calling up a restaurant and seeing if they know somebody who's trying to get a job as a delivery guy, but apparently that's what bike thieves do, and in NYC people tend to think you're trying to scam them. i could also put it on craigslist, but people would think i'm trying to scam them, or they'd be scammers looking to score a free bike to re-sell, or whatever.

so, know anybody?

I give bikes away to needy people. I looked into forming a charity, under my rabbi's advice, but the overhead would be too high. The last bike I gave away went to a recovering alcoholic woman who lost custody of her teenage son. She's doing well now, and so is her son, with her sister. She has a job and an apartment but no car, so I refurbished a police auction bike for her.

So if you like, I can make sure your bike goes to a good home.

You could try to look for something like http://workingbikes.org/. I'm sure New York has to have one. If you really want to, you can start your own :D. Might be much for one bike though.

They also take donated bikes at their shops in DUMBO & the East Village... and they say they need adult mountain bikes.
If one of those shops is not too inconvenient, IMO it would be much simpler than vetting the people who would respond to you on Craigslist or Freecycle - though those are options, as well.

I know someone who personally needs one. She wanted to ride with us and use a bike but my spare is too big for her. 19" would work for her, I think and I could tune it up for her.

Let me know. Thanks!

Maybe it would be helpful to physically go, with bike in hand, somewhere where you suspect you might find folks in need...
