The angle of those bars looks painful to me. If you go find the article about this, it shows his position. That makes the bike look a lot more sensible than it might otherwise look. He's trying to get aero effects while still meeting the "Merckx" rules.

Would they not simply change the rules to outlaw his position?

Wow, the size of the chainring looks bigger than my spare tire.

Looks as if the same position could be obtained with a slacker seattube, though that does get into the territory of unnecessarily long (read = noodly) top tubes. The bar position is inspired for achieving the tucked position with traditional drops; that's for sure.

Well planned frameset, if you ask me.

So I can't even use my gears in 53 - 13 unless I'm going downhill! I typically carry 31mph pedaling at a good effort on the preceeding flat and I can't maintain that for long.
Obviously I'm not in shape but geeze.

maybe there is hope for us over 40 yet.

I bet the bike has imperial oval fork blades too.

Going back to the 2009 bike, is there a compelling reason he didnt just use a 12t or 11t rear cog and keep the chainring size somewhat normal? I wonder if perhaps frictional losses are significantly worse for chain on a tiny rear cog...

Gotta love that guy...

12T track cogs are available, but need a special lockring. Perhaps efficiency is part of it, as it really drops off under 13T or 14T.

I read somewhere that the 2009 bike didn't handle well on banked tracks, so he had to stop using it.

I didn't know anything about him before this thread. He seems like an inspirational figure now that i've read a little about him. Cool bike, cooler guy.

I'm not sure of how much the movie actually followed his real life, but if you a cyclist and haven't seen it, I think you should. I liked it a lot.
