I posted the following question on the C&V page. Thought it might be more appropriate here:

I'm rebuilding an 80's Giant 12 speed road bike and plan on replacing the stock components with Shimano 600 EX Abaresque pieces I have acquired over the past year. The BB spindle I removed from the bike is 113MM in length. The several "Abaresque" BB spindles that I've seen on various web sites, including
e-Bay, have all been 116MM in length.

My question is, will my 113MM spindle work with the Abaresque cranks or will I need to find a spindle that is 116MM long?

You have nothing to lose by trying it. :)

If it works, yay! :thumb:

If not, you just need to find the proper spindle.

The design of the crank itself is one of the most significant factors in determining the spindle length that you need. Never-the-less, 3mm difference is roughly about 1 1/2 mm per side. That's not very much. There's a good chance that the shorter spindle length will work without your chainring rubbing the chain stay or creating chain line problems.

If it was my bike and I already had the parts I'd definitely put them together and see how they work. If I was buying new parts I'd hold out for a 116 mm spindle.
