Recumbent - Only on a Recumbent

I discovered something that can't be done on a diamond frame bike, but is easy on a recumbent.

Using a drive up ATM.

I always have to get off my diamond-frame bike to use the drive up ATM. But today I discovered that my Giro 20 is just the right height to ride up and do the deed. Unlike when I stand, the ATM screen and the buttons are easy to understand. No parrallax problems. ;)

I have not done the ATM but do use the drive up window at the bank...RANS Stratus...saw a guy on a diamond frame this morning doing same.

I once rode the 'Sydney to Gong' ride, lots of hills, cliffside scenery and trees. I stopped at a roadside cafe halfway along the ride and got lunch then proceeded to ride up the next hill while munching my healthy burger. There was a line of cyclists walking up the steep grade, I just rode up while still eating, very laidback and comfy. The comment that got me was some woman complaining to her partner "and he's eating too!". Hard to grin when you're eating.
Another time I was coming home in the dark and passed a group of youths on the other side of the road, one saw me and being a drunken yob decided to show off for his mates, ran at me shouting and it was obvious that he was going to spray his beer bottle at me. I waited until he got really close then flicked the wheels towards him, got the inside wheel off the ground, at about groin height for him, and kept pedalling, He backpedalled so fast! Completely put off doing the act and his mates noticed, laughed. He must have been thinking 'bike', not 'trike'.
Last one. Pulled up for an event, stopped at a picnic area. The trikers stayed as is, their deckchairs already in place. One of the SWB guys pulls his seat off the bike, it is set up so that the struts help hold the seat up on flat ground, basically his own camper chair. Everyone else stands or gets grass stains or wet bum. I'd like to see a DF do that one.

Only on a recumbent--riding along and have a big dog trying to bite you while you are eyeball to eyeball.

I used the ATM and the drive-thru teller at my bank for almost a year until last month. When I rode up to deposit my paycheck, the teller informed me that I would have to park and come in the bank. When I complained to the branch manager I was told that this had always been their policy. She had no explanation as to why no one had said anything sooner, nor could she tell me why there are no signs indicating "motorized vehicles only" at the drive-thru. True, I can get off my trike, but there is no rack, nor any stationary object to which I can securely lock my trike while in the bank. When I pointed this out to the manager, her response was that "we have security on the premises". Also true, but it didn't stop them from being robbed a few months back, plus I don't think their security people would see my trike as their priority. Ironically, the bank recently put up signs touting their "Green" policies. Obviously, they haven't a clue about HPV's yet.

Bring the trike inside with you. If anyone asks, tell the truth. The drive-up windows don't recognize HPVs, and you have no reason to believe the bank would replace your trike if it were stolen if you left it outside.
You might print up an adhesive label to stick on their "Green" policies poster, "HUMAN POWERED VEHICLES, HOWEVER, ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE DRIVE-UP LANES."

Maui has a drive up window for getting unemployment checks. Ooooh, on a recumbent. Yes, it is paradise. bk

It's knee high.

I too have enjoyed being able to put the food in my lap while doing a century on my Giro 20 and munch away. The only problem was that I wouldn't finish the cookies and forget about them so they would fall out when I stood up to take a break.

On that same ride I also encountered some loose and aggressive dogs. The lead one was sure surprised when I spit a mouthful of water in his face at close range as I went by. That stopped his advance.

Looks like she brought a little fuzzy friend along for a ride on her handlebars. And maybe a video camera.

My husband has a Lighting P-38.

When marking a route with paint, he can paint the road while sitting on the bike.

Is there a recumbent equivalent of the aviation community's "mile-high club"? If not, there should be! Who wants to go first? :D

The law in most states says that bicycles are vehicles and are entitled to all the rights and privilidges (and are bound by the same duties and obligations; a point forgotten by many cyclists) as motor vehicles. Check the law in your state and waive it under the nose of your bank manager. If he talks about 'private propery', tell him that the bank is a place of public accomodation--they are licensed by the state to provide a public service, and are therefore quasi-public. (It is arguable in court, but be both assertive and polite and he'll probably back down.)

Even though WV is the most bicycle-unfriendly state in the Union, I have NEVER had any trouble getting served from my bike at a drive-through.

They are a place of public accomodation. They can't discriminate. Especially the bank, which is chartered by either the state or federal government as a financial services institution.

Arguable, yes. But if you are both firm and polite in presenting your case, they'll back down; after all, they don't want to loose a customer, do they--or get bad publicity if you decide to go to the media? (Remember that lady in Portland who was refused at a hamburger joint?)
