1. Ok. Fugi is a good name brand and this is a good price. But the Aluminum frame doesn't have the carbon rear like a couple of the others
2. Good. It's 853 steel and the combo of components is good for the price. If you want steel, this is a good deal.
3. It's sold out, why are you considering it?
4 & 5. Ok - they have the carbon rear triangles and decent mixes.

If you want aluminum, check out this: http://www.getawaybikes.com/Detail.cfm?Categoryid=33&BrandID=11&ProductID=932&CFID=3934348&CFTOKEN=23766119

I't's gotten a lot of good press lately and has separated itself a bit from those generic brands.

FYI - All of these bikes are Fuji's. They are the exact same frames. The 2005 Mercier and the Motobecane are 2004 Fuji models. I am 44 and there is one clear choice for me. The Legacy Pro with full ultegra triple, Reynolds Ouzo Comp carbon fiber fork at around 20 lbs. I own a Fuji Robaix with 105. It's about 5 years old and has 105 componentry. This bike is basically very close to the Roubaix Pro or the 2003 Marselle - which shifted from 853 to an aluminum frame (X-fusion). If you need to go light, take a look at Mercier Draco 2005 - Identical to the 2004 Fuji Team at 17.2 pounds.

Are you claiming that all or some of these generic brands are made by Fuji and are based on previous or existing models? Can you back that claim up?

Reason it's important it that questions about the quality of these bikes come up all the time and it would be great to point to a company like Fuji as a source behind a great many of them. Thanks.

i have a friend who got the Motobecane Legancy Pro and is quite happy with it, although he hasn't put many miles on it to this point. it's not very flashy or fancy looking but it is a good value in a steel/ultegra complete bike.

http://www.gvhbikes.com/

check out the first two bikes in the "special values" section.

the Raleigh Professional there is comparable to the Legacy Pro and not as plain looking. not sure how the other stuff on it compares, but things shouldn't vary too much at that price given you're getting an Ultegra component group. the gvhbikes ppl are very well thought of on this board as well. bikesdirect, while my friend didn't have any problems, are thought to be a bit more of a crapshoot as far as service after the purchase i think.

i'm not excited about any of the aluminum choices you listed, but that's just me - i ride an older cheap alum frame and i have stigmatized them as being a rough ride, which isn't true of all alum frames by any means, but the ones you list from bikesdirect are likely to be the type of cheap 7005 series alum that would benefit from carbon stays at least.
