Foo - wy is my keyboad skippng lettrs?

starting today m kebard is skipping letters that i tye. it happens ranomly. i am typing this and mking sure i hi every key but i skps a lot ofthem. it is exremely annying because ihve to goback and edt it.

i typed that at normal speed and hit every key and that is what showed up. To write this here took way to long and was extremely frustrating. I had to retype more then half of it.

What is going on? I think I have a virus of some sort. Any free programs I can try?

Clean your keyboard

it is not related to the actual keyboard. It is something with the computer. I switched keyboards to be sure of that too. It happened after my cousi tried to download something that was 99% a virus of some sort. I have some stupid Norton 360 but that scanned and didn't find anything wrong. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

get a mac.... sorry, somebody had to do it. Seen it with wireless keyboards when the battery is dying, but not plugged in ones. If going through a usb hub have you tried without?

You might have a keylogger, a badly written one might do this.

My recommendations:

1: Back up your machine if you haven't already. I'd buy an Iomega removable drive because it comes with decent backup software, Retrospect. XP Home by default has no backup software although you can install the package from the CD, and Vista has no backup software in the OS at all. At the least, copy your files from your My Documents or Documents directory.

2: Download and install Malwarebytes.

3: Consider changing your AV protection, either to the 2009 version of Norton, AVG, or Avast!. Avast!, if you have a 32 bit version of Windows can scan for viruses and malware before the main part of the OS boots, which helps catch a lot of stuff.

As for buying a Mac, its an idea if you have the cash. Don't think you will be completely protected from nasty software though. There is an unpatched hole (http://blogs.computerworld.com/mac_os_x_java_fiasco_apple_still_doesnt_get_security) in Apple's implementation. Already, the bad guys know how to exploit this. Due to licensing, Sun can't make a JVM or fix for this, only Apple can, so until Apple gets off its duff and puts a fix out, Macs are vulnerable. Funny thing is that Apple has done a lot with making OS X decently secure, from MAC profiles such as the one that prevents anything but Time Machine from writing to the backup drive. However, you get lapses like the Java issue that make a person wonder.

I think its because Apple has two types of developer mentalities. The die-hard BSD guys who can make an OS and lock it down, and the guys who do the UI stuff who don't really care or worry about security in the slightest, just that things are usable and "just work".

IMHO, I think that the 64 bit version of Vista, coupled with a decent antivirus product should be decently secure for almost any needs, especially if you use Firefox as your Web browser of choice with Adblock and perhaps Noscript to lock out potential exploits.

Thank you very much. I just downloaded that program and started a scan. Ill let you know what happens.

That program found seven things and now the computer runs fine. thank you very much. i took a screenshot of what it found but when i restarted the computer i didnt save it so i lost it. i remember seeing the words trojan on one and worm on another lol. either way it is good now so thank you very much!!!!!! i appreciate it!!!!!

+1, I was told it was a problem with my comp, but it kept happening, cleaned the keyboard and the problem was gone. :thumb:

Ad Aware is another excellent program. I run F-Secure for firewall, virus protection and spy ware which is provided free from my ISP. It works well but I've found that it's helpful to have Ad Aware in addition to scan for spyware and malware occasionally. Even if you have Norton or McAfee. Our tech support at work even uses it.
