I know times are tough for sponsorship but it seems like there might be something else going on? Any thoughts?

I always figured Katie Compton could easily find a spot on a factory team, but preferred to pick and choose sponsors to maintain autonomy.

Or is there some new situation?

This ten-minute interview pretty much covers her whole sponsorship situation. Basically she's so picky about her gear that she has to privateer and make do. So, arguably the most talented female cyclist in the USA is swapping jerseys five minutes before her start.
